Handstand pushups
does anyone incorporate this exercise in their shoulder workout? this is a very effective workout and it really tests your strength. i've noticed i've been able to lift more weights during my routine because of this exercise. i highly recommend this!

Both methods are useful.
Yes, great for your shoulder/scap structure.
I use them frequently to keep my ol'bod from failing me

I used to be able to do them... back when I was 175-185 lbs. Haven't tried them in years... actually forgot about them. I can do a handstand, but I doubt I can do them as efficiently as I used to. I weigh 225lbs now (down from 245lbs)

They are decent, but I reserve them from when I am out of the gym and have to crunch a workout in. I feel they are inferior to DB press or BB press because you have limited ROM because your head obviously gets in the way. But they are a pretty good exercise to mix in every now and then.

the press is an effective workout, but if you do both the press and H. pushup your strength will increase that much more! i'd recommend one workout doing the H. pushup and the next time the military press, you'll have a better chance of increasing strength this way

I can't do handstand push-ups so looking into paralettes to see if I can balance myself on them via greater grip

The paralettes are a good way to go. They also allow you a greater ROM, than just off your hands.
You can make some paralettes for not too much money, or can buy a set for about 40-50 bucks.
I will be incorporating them into my workouts pretty soon. I will use my rings and place my lat tower up close to the wall. Then I can brace myself with the wall and do the presses. I'm using my bench right now, with the back angled all the way up. Then I use it as my foot brace. I'm not totally vertical, but it is enough to put a good stress on my shoulders.

I plan on using PVC to build the paralettes based off of http://board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?t=13374 Same thing I did with my gymnastic rings, using PVC and ratcheting nylon rope to keep it cheap and basic. So these may not be true paralettes in entire length, should function for what I require.

Hey Issac, I never saw this thread. Yes I do handstand pushups or I did till the groin injury. Yes it is better then military, because in my case its 158 lbs being applied to my shoulders, and the pump I would get was sick. I have to do then against a wall, to keep my balance. But I get 10 reps per set of 3-5. Im a bit ticked over this groin thing cause now when I do the flip and the legs split...guess what I feel. So, I can do them now but I love doing them when I can as well as the other calis excercises.
You know me the wanna be calis king..lol.

i havent done those in a while, and i should incorporate them into my shoulder routines, i always just blindly did them with my back against the wall trying to balance myself as much as i could so maybe one day i could do a couple without a wall haha

I'd recommend buying or building some 'stands' for your hands....(hehe). Paralelletes is what I think they are really called.
Basically, if you do a handstand pushup on the ground you can't go down because your head will stop you. With the paralelletes you can get the full rom and it changes the position of your wrist - handstands can be painful for some people with bad wrists (like me, damn surgery).
Anyway, if you do handstand pushups - it's totally worth checking out.

paul anderson used to do them regulary and he had a 600lbs push press. obviously he weighted 400lbs so it was good for him for strength but you could buy a weight vest and try them
