A type of Kidney Cancer called Renal Cell Cancer... took out half my right kidney in 2004... and I went back in to remission and got yearly catscans... they found half a dozen tumors had metastazied to my lower right lung in early 2007 so they took out the entire lower portion of the lung in May 2007... then after that my 90 day post op catscan they found a single metastatis in the middle of my right lung so they did a 3rd surgery to remove it.

There is a drug called Interleukin-2 whichs works in about 7% of cases but you are int he hsopital for months getting it in cycles, but the side effects are really brutal and it is a last resort
My Oncologist told me the side effects of IL-2 (Interleukin 2) "made radiation and chemotherapy look kije a trip to disneyland"
Hearing that sorta sucked.

The first time they really thought they got it all... the tumor on my kidney was 8 centimeters... a big tumor.
When Kidney cancer comes back it ALWAYS comes back some place other than they kidney. (most often the lungs or the liver). Basically it means before they took the orignal tumor out, some cancer cells broke off from the original tumor and started floating through my body... and decided to park themselves in my right lung. As it was three years before the first time and the second time, they really thought the had gotten it all. After the first surgery, they put the odds of it ever coming back again @ 5% because I was Stage 1... lucky me I guess.

Good question... I'll save you the obvious cliches about appriciating life more... As for the practical, I did lost 2 jobs over it and I am now making half of what I was making before I got sick... but I can pay my bills and have health insurance which is a big big plus.
As for feeling like a badass... dunno really... the footlong scar across my right abdomen usually raises lots of questions when I go to the beach... and I have another one (6-7 inches or so) which runs north/south under my right armpit where they did the lung surguries... so i get alot of comments. Basically, I don't feel all that brave/badass... I mean it's not like I chose to get cancer..... just decided to fight like hell once I got it.
Back to your question about how it has affected my life... I guess he biggest thing is that you really really do see how everyone feels about you... it is too big an issue for anyone to hide... most of the people in my life really stepped up... there were a few people who dissapointed me and dropped out of site... but you need to focus on staying alive rather than feeling sorry for yourself.
As for my dating life... cancer had just trainwrecked it... a chick finds out you have had cancer 3 time sin 4 years and they get a look in their eye that just says "dead man walkin'"

ha! damn man... went on an hour long bike ride about 4 months after my last surgery... my a** was killing my afterwards... I have no idea how those guys do it... as for Lance Armstrong though... been a big inspiration... read his book while in the hospital... helped alot...
It's hard to describe really.. I mean alot of people who care about you step up and help... but you are the only one looking @ dying... and that realization makes you feel very, very alone

How do you believe the world has changed since the advent of antibiotics?
Namely, do you believe that it actually has hurt modern society, in the sense that we end up with superbugs due to resistance built up by germs, due to our overuse of them?

Was diagnosed @ 33... am 36 now... they caught it by dumb luck... Renal Cell cancer is an old persons disease... the average age of a person who gets it is about 60. I had one Oncologist tell me "you know... I think you are the youngest Renal Cell Cancer patient I have ever seen..."
Just remember thinking... "you know doc... I really ould have done without hearing that..."

I really hope you stay in good health. One thing I'm learning more and more is that good health is the most important thing in life, moreso than riches or success or anything.

Thanks man.. I don't blame them much... in your mid 30's women who want kids stat panicking a little. I usually wait several dates until it appears it is going somewhere... then I tell them. Same thing happens every time... I get the "so sorry you had to go through that but it doesn't change how I feel and it doesn't scare me off..." speech... and then I never hear from them again... I think they go hom and talk about it with their GF's and change their mind... I am sort of immune to it by now.

Sorry about your grandad... once you get cancer you almost feel like you have been admitted to this exclusive club... a club you don't want anyone else to join
