What happend to bodybuilders when they get old?

I didn't know what category this fell into, but I decided to post it on this board since everyone has been helpful to date. I wonder what happens to bodybuilders when they get old.

In particular, what happens to all that muscle mass? Does it just turn to fat? If so, at what age?

Also, have any professional bodybuilders managed to maintain a decent look after age 55?

The reason I ask is that I was watching my Mike Mentzer HIT video last night, and he looked out of shape. I understand that he had some health issues that he had to deal with before his untimely death, but he went through a drastic change since the late 1970s, when he had that amazing physique.

There's a pretty old guy at my gym. Hes probably in his 60's, but his arms are still huge and pretty ripped. And he's still real strong, despite being the biggest jackass in the world. I dont know if he kept his physique how he used to look, but hes still pretty strong.

i think it is b/c they finally stop w/ the juice gh and stuff and so they lose a lot of size and they dont train near as hard after...if you want an example of an old BBer try Sergio Oliva he competed in the 84, 85 olympia if though he was over 50 and still got in the top 8

people lose their muscles when they reduce their training and diets.

ill let you know in 30 years how aging specifically affects the muscles when someone is still training and eating to increase muscle mass and strength.

at that time ill be 60.

Look at Arnold. He is still pretty diesel and he's in his mid to late 40's I believe. If you stay with it (working out), it (muscle) stays with you.

Arnold was on the Fox pregame yesterday before the NFC championship. He looks good, but I was amazed at how small he was. Howie Long, Terry Bradshaw, and even Chris Collinsworth (former RECEIVER) were a good deal larger than Arnold. Regardless, his still is, and will always be THE MAN!

dude i was thinkin the same, i thought arnold was 6'2" if so then collinsworth is 6'7" i think it was the camera angel that made him look smaller

yea it had to be the angle and the tv effects cuz Bradshaw is not big and though Collinsworth is pretty tall hes definitely thin.
i saw Arnold for a sec on best damn sports show and hes still got it.

If they continue to train and eat right, I would imagine that their muscles remain hard and defined, but decrease in size.

All that muscle turns into fat. It also happens very quickly.

Oh boy......

People, muscle does NOT turn into fat. Muscles simply atrophy, and if someone still eats like they do when they have been training and building muscle, that is where the FAT part comes in!

And not all pros die from steroid abuse, etc etc. THAT is a falsehood and enough of the steroid witch hunt! HRT / GH therapy is known to be very effective and therapeutic for the more mature lifter, so, do the research, guys!
