How can Olympians traveling long distances recover in less time?

The best way for Olympic athletes to recover from traveling long distances is to travel on their day off. While traveling the athlete needs to insure that he/she gets tons of rest during the travel (even if that means taking first class on airlines). If time permits traveling should be done in short segments over a period of time so the athlete is less affected by time zone changes or travel sickness. While most athletes hate traveling, even more hate missing a day of training.

What is the best way to complete final prep for major competition?

The last few weeks of final prep for major competition the athlete's focus should be spent specifically on his/her events and not on strength building or drills(minus the olympic lifters of course). The athlete should not change his/her diet all of the sudden. The athlete should watch his/her favorite inspiration video in the leading days of his/her event for extra motivation. The athlete should also be getting well enough rest for his/her events.

What training methods do professional & amateur athletes use to recover from extensive traveling?

Many athletes have what they call "light" days or "recovery" days. For example if a distance runner spent the whole afternoon Wednesday running 800m repeats for a speed workout. The next day the distance runner would run 8-10 miles at a fairly easy pace to recover from the day before but also get a decent workout in. In the case of traveling, traveling could be considered the hard training day and when the the athlete finishes an extensive trip, the first day of training should be an easy recovery day, and harder workouts should follow in following days.

Are there any supplements (accepted by WADA & NCAA) that would speed up the recovery process?

-Whey protein is sure to speed up muscle recovery and repair, especially drinking right after workout.
-Casein protein at night is a good idea to prevent soreness the next morning.
-Energy bars (like powerbars) that have a high amount of carbs are great for energy when energy levels are low.
-A multivitamin with a high amount of b12 for energy production.

1 Travel on days when you don't need to train and get as much rest as you can, and eat plenty of calories so replenish glycogen stores.

2 The athlete should train hard multiple times a week and don't change anything in his/her diet or training regiment. Also the athlete should make sure to get plenty of rest.

3 Train hard everyday, even on traveling days

4 whey protein, multi-vitamins, and overall high carbs to restore glycogen reserves

TOPIC: How Can Olympians Traveling Long Distances Recover In Less Time?

    For the week of: 7/29 - 8/04

Get ready the 2008 Olympics are upon us. Olympians who have to travel a long distance need to be able to recover quickly, so getting there and getting ready on short notice is paramount.

How can Olympians traveling long distances recover in less time?

Olympians can recover in less time by doing a few things.

    1. Start getting into a schedule before the competiton. Since most olympians jobs are training, they can get into the schedule of waking up and going to sleep at the time they would in China or wherever they are competing. Then, when they arrive in the location of the competition, they will be in schedule and won't have to deal with the time zone change.

    2. Rest a lot before and after traveling. By resting the day before and after traveling, the Olympians bodies will be much better rested and will recover easily from the long traveling.

What is the best way to complete final prep for major competition?

The best way to complete final prep for a major competition is to peak in your final training sessions with a mock competetion, and then take a week of recovery and light training. For example. a weightlifter would slowly build up his numbers, and a week before competetion have a mock competetion (3 attempts at a maximum effort snatch and clean and jerk). Then, for the next week, he would train lightly and let his body recover.

This way, he will be comfortable with what he will be doing in the competition, and he would be prepared.

What training methods do professional & amateur athletes use to recover from extensive traveling?

Most athletes recover by getting lots of rest and training lightly. The light training will help the athletes get any kinks out of there body, and help reduce soreness. The rest is essential so the body can repair its muscles and the Central Nervous System wont get worn down.

Are there any supplements (accepted by WADA & NCAA) that would speed up the recovery process?

Some supplements such as Branched chain amino acids will help the muscles recover, which would help traveling athletes. Also, taking sleeping pills on the plane would ensure that the athlete gets adequate rest on the plane so they will not be tired when they get off.

Hope this helps everyone who is going to be competing in the olympics or anybody whos trying to recover from long trips.
