kids in mma
did any one see the special on espn(sunday morn) about kids and mma? they are 7 years old beating the crap put of each other. i'm not too sure i agree with this. 7 year old children shouldn't be involved in such a violet sport. am i wrong?
don't get me wrong, i love mma, but it was a little disturbing to see children fighting like adults.

When you're that age you should be focusing on fundamental athletic sports (wrestling, boxing, football, track). I don't see a problem with it if they're properly protected, though

no head gear is wrong. i saw a docu about kids in muay thai a while back, problem was they focussed on the people who give the sport a bad name; the people who couldnt make it as a fighter, and so live vicariously through their kids.
wankers.
anyway, if the kids are invloved at such an early age, theyll probably lose interest early too. at 7 youre only just finding out what you like, you shouldnt be forced into something like that.

^^^ agreed i started at 4 and stopd for a few years, became that f'uck you dad kid lmao. Its pretty dumb to have them doing MMA they should do muay thai, box, or jiu jitsu and def not competition yet. I understand if its a cultural standpoint as in thailand where you are retired by the time your 22

yeah, i know many boxers start fighting at like 9, like buakaw and orono. (oronos first fight was at 9 years old against a lad of 13! iirc)
if it was my kids, id have them in martial arts classes at say 5 years old, maybe raise the idea of competitions at 10 or 11. nothing full contact until they get to maybe 14/15. even thats young.

Muay Thai, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Wrestling, Boxing, and the normal collegiate sports is all I'd let my child do. Maybe, MAYBE Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But I'd wait until he/she was in the double digits for that.

well in good jiu jitsu classes they dont show the kids the joint locks until they get older and can use correct judgment.

How is boxing or Muay Thai any better than MMA from a safety perspective?

I wouldn't be worried about the kicks and punches (or elbows) as much as the locks and joint holds. And the GnP

im 50/50 on that one. no way would i allow my child to even learn that stuff until they were old enough to understand it. im going to send my stepson into either judo or jiu jitsu soon, no way would i ever let him learn muay thai or even boxing at an age where pushing someone out of the way to the slide is his biggest priority. i dont want my neighbours complaining that he gave their kid a broken nose or whatever.

Well, in a sense, yeah. But since MMA has advanced ground tactics, as well as some dangerous locks, I would associate "no" with both.
When they were 12 or 13, I'd let them BJJ and Judo around.

If I ever have a kid he's starting BJJ at age 3 and after he's trained in that for a few years I'm shipping him over to Thailand to train and fight. Once he has a solid base in both I'll mold him into the Ultimate Fighter.

If my kid wants to do MMA at a young age, then why not? Kids don't see it in the same ways we do, they're just having fun. Didnt you used to "fight" with your buddies when you were a kid too? Why not teach them proper technique and fundamentals at a young age so when they get older they can use it to help develop into a great fighter.
Its not different than letting your kid play any other sport at a young age. But it is the parent's responsibility to make sure wherever you kid is doing it, that they are running their program safely and that your kids are in good hands.

I just watched a vid with kids fighting, It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. They seem to be more focused on technicality then hurting each other. I think if I saw a kid screaming, foaming at the mouth wanting to kill the other one I would be worried.

i saw it, that Play Fighting headmaster had a better idea of what should be involved in allowing children into the world of MA. twisting joints in competitions where one may be hesitant to tap may end up damaging the body when it is most maleable. and thats not to mention the damage to a devloping brain from concusions. Also, MMA in its full context should be taught at an age where an individual has the moral compass to not be the dickhead who throws the first punch in a fight to try and act tough and get people to like him (yes i got "moral compass" from seinfeld)
Discipline, Heart, Determination, Technique, Athleticism- YES
Becoming Punch Drunk before hitting high school - NO
