In This Thread I Judge Which Football Code Has The Best Athletes

Which football code has the OVERALL best athletes? Well, I'll tell you.

    ------------------Speed--Endurance--Strength--Coordination--TOTAL
    1.Australian Rules:.....8.........10..............7............ 9.................8.5
    2.Rugby/League:.......8.........7................9........ ....5.................7.25
    3.American Football:..10........2...............10........... 6.5...............7.125
    3.Soccer:................7..........8............. ..2............10................6.75

SPEED: American Football clearly leads in this department. It isn't unusual at all for NFL players to have been track-stars in their college days, setting low 10 seconds times over 100m.

ENDURANCE: No contest. An AFL player will run up to and sometimes exceed 20km a game. That's a half-marathon each week.

STRENGTH: The strongest players in the NFL, Rugby, AFL, and Soccer bench (not that this is the only measure of strength) around 250kg, 200kg, 175kg respectively, and... maybe the weight of the bar for Soccer's strongest (joking). American Football wins.

COORDINATION: This is a close one. An AFL player is expected to be able to run while bouncing an oval ball and then kick the ball accurately over 50 metres+ while travelling at speed, while evading tacklers. The receiver of the pass will have to physically contend with other players in the air to try to 'mark' (catch) the ball. A Soccer player is expected to run and pass opposition while dribbling the ball at his feet. They are also expected to accurately use their head to pass and score. As for American Football and Rugby, while technique is crucial in many aspects of their game, it's largely about speed x weight. That said, throwing the ball is also a significant part of each game; An NFL quarterback will throw the ball downfield where a receiver is expected to try to fool and evade coverage to catch the ball. Aerial contests in the NFL are quite tame physically-wise compared to the AFL, but once the catch is made the receiver is fair game. There is also a fair bit of technique involved to do with blocking and shedding blocks in the American game.

    Thanks.

By the way, American football is my fav sport, so I have no bias against them.
The truth is that they are too unbalanced, that is why they only scored 7.125

Rugby requires more co ordination than 5, you have to constantly think about your position, your opposite number, whether or not to go into contact, dummies, switches, etc, doesn't sound hard but when it comes down to it its a lot harder than 5/10.

you cant honestly tell me you think that AFL guy is a better athlete than barry f*cking sanders.

play through the 4th quarter of a football game with the lactic acid building in your muscles and your whole body bruised and tell me it takes '2' endurance.

it's not like they stop and catch their breath every time

No, I gave them 2 in that attribute, which is the same as what I gave Soccer in strength. I'm not saying it ain't tough, but lets face it a play lasts a few seconds, then they get a 30 second - 2 minute rest, AND they specialise.

Well you did put the greatest running back of all time (barry sanders imo) as a football rep yet gave american football the lowest coordination skills? I guess i can see why in that other than the skill positions, they are slow and just used as a meat shield. Some are very agile and dextrous though...

Hey so long as you put soccer as dead last, I really have no problems. Fuk soccer.

I have played Gridiron (as it is called here) competitively. It's brutal but not the same as running 10, 15, or 20km while having to tackle, be tackled, evade, kick, scramble on the ground for the ball, getting kneed in the back or kidney in aerial contests. I could go on and on.

Rugby had a lower Coordination rating, and I considered agility in the Speed category.

No 2 plays have a 30 second gap in between unless a time out is called.

American football wins in coordination imo

But you're right about the endurance, NFL players have to go suck on an oxygen tank after every play because they're pooped out

the whole endurance thing is saying that someone who runs 6 miles w/o any resistance is far and away in better shape than someone who sprints 15 yards into a full collision.

sure american football players run much less, but they get beat to hell. how many soccer players struggle to get out of bed the next day and pop pain killers during the game?
When it comes to the NHL thread I'm the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

Are you preparing your field for the rain?

That happens in football to dickweed.
    1. NFL teams will usually use most of the play-clock (which is 45 seconds, I believe).

    2. No NFL player runs close to those distances. A good day for a running-back is 100-200 metres gained, plus running routes and so on might push that up to 500 metres, no more.

Too bad they use yards which are longer than meters.

This is Australia. Anyway, I'm not gonna check, but I pretty sure 100 metres is about 115-120 yards, no?

How many games do other players play per week.
Football only plays one because they are out practicing and perfecting skills.

Whoever says that American football players have no endurance has obviously never played. There are games where in the fourth quarter you can barely stand up, and you are afraid your legs are about to collapse under you whenever you break in a different direction. It takes a combination of cardiovascular and muscular endurance unlike any other sport.

Don't forget that in terms of yards gained football only counts net yards up the field. Examples include some scrambles by Reggie Bush that were sometimes 2-3 times longer than the yards we was given because backtracking across the field doesn't count, it's only yards up the field.

Pretty much what I said above goes here. You have any idea what it feels like to go through 4 quarters of football? Not to mention possible over time? And think about the linemen, thats 250 to 300 plus pound bodies colliding with each other every single play. They've described it as getting into car accidents. Try doing that for 4 quarters, 16 games of the year, not to mention mini camps, training camp [ie 2-a-days], pre season and if your lucky into the postseason. Oh yeah, not to mention they do that for 12+ years. Yeah, I think that deserves 10+ endurance, you have no idea what kind of toll that takes on the body not to mention everything I just said.

And running backs have it even worse. But Im not going to go into that.

Lots of stupidity in this dumb thread
