home gym= bad idea. Just buy a gym memebership. I know of a few decent gyms that only charge around 200-300 yearly. That is about 3 years of being a member. Think about it.. your not gonna bring your home gym to college so why not pay just as much for a memebership where u have access to various sets of equipment instead of just one.

What? Like olympic size bench press? Their so expensive, is it really neccarry? I dont wanna get adjustable dumbells because if i get stronger ill just buy a new set, right now i can only do 30s and drop down to 25's. But ill think about getting an adjustable set. What do you mean " and the bench for starters"
What?
I dont have any gyms near by, the closest one charges 750$ a year, i could make my own gym for that money.

wow that sucks! lol. Ok ima help you out here. First, Buy a power rack + lat pulldown connection. This way you can do tricep pushdowns, cable curls, and a number of differnet exerceises with it. Second, buy an olympic barbell set. And third, buy a pair of adjustabel dumbell HANDLES made for olympic barbell sets, so you dont have to buy weight s again. I defientely would not go with those hex shaped dumbells cuz u cant adjust them. Adjustable dumbells are great cuz u can put as musch weight as you want on them. Where do you live (state) cuz i know of some gooooood deals.

Yeah, I saw a 100lb. barbell set at Walmart for $100, and a 40lb. Dumbbell set for $40. So for $140 + tax, you could get 140lbs. with the barbell and dumbbells, and a lot of weight plates.
Good and affordable benches range from $100-$200, Walmart too.
A total of $240-$340.
Buy more weight plates as you increase weights.Lift, Grow, Conquer.

Buy a power rack and a bench (just a regular flat bench or adjustable incline bench no attachments, you can stick it in your power rack and bench there easily). Then buy an olympic barbell and a set of plates (~300 lbs to start).
You would be getting the BEST value for your money if you buy only those and focus on the big compound lifts. Squats, Deadlifts, Military Press, Bench, and Row. You can do all of those with simply a power rack and an adjustable bench. I would also consider buying a dip/pullup station because those are cheap. Think about it. If someone told you that they bench/squat/dead 225/315/405 then would you wonder if they had "missing muscles" because they didn't do lat pulldowns or tricep extentions? Of course not. If you are limited by money, focus on the BIGGEST lifts, not a piddly lat pulldown.
I know that you can only use 30lbs now, but next week that means you should be trying 35 lbs! You should always be moving the weight up. Not having the right weights to use is a poor excuse not to be raising the weight!
edit: dont spend your money on dumbells. A barbell set is going to give you far more value. I could easily finish my entire workout with just barbells, but the same can't be said for dumbells.Last edited by yoj; 07-24-2008 at 06:23 PM.

When I say set, is that you get the handles and decent weights. Yeah the barbell is "the bench press bar".
Get them as you like, the best way for you economically.
I g2g right now dude so I won't be able to reply back after this post.
Conclusion- at the end you must have the weights, the bars, and a bench.Lift, Grow, Conquer.
