I think the main point is to do it. I think if you're at the point where you can't decide which one to do, you've got good motivation and defintely on the right track.
Try to factor in: HIIT is good for fat weight and explosivtivity. Low impact cardio is good for keeping the HR high for extended periods of time. So maybe use your 'out of gym' experiences to decide which to do. Do you play soccer? Maybe half HIIT half cardio etc. Try alternating every weeek, one week HIIT one cardio.
I suggest you do not do too much HIIT. I think 3 days of HIIT is enough. If you want more aerobic exercise, then add in some moderate intensity cardio. Don't skimp on the weight training either. Probably minimum of 3 days per week of weights.
