Question about the final battle scene of "300"

When Leonidas sees Ephialtes again after he betrayed him he says to him that he may live forever. What does this mean? Is this something like a curse, that he may live forever as a cripple?

His name is a curse or like a bad omen to this day in Greece.

Ephialtes is now known for betraying the 5000 or so greeks who faught at the hot gates.

"may you live forever" is like saying, "good or bad, may your name live on for eternity" in history books, or what have you.

I beleive at that time people were desperate to be martyed and live forever was actually a burden.

The movie was kind of accurate. Except they left out all the naval battle stuff.

Ephialtes is like a slang for nightmare now... or something along those lines.

I am not sure about them being as defined as they were in the movie. but in order to pick up a shield that was maid of solid wood and covered in bronze, that was big enough to cover most of your body, and fight with them for a few hours (unlike in the movie a battle would have taken hours to finish) and still be able to move your arms, they had to be built, they would probably look like Light Heavyweights, or Heavyweights in the UFC

The history channel has a show about the actual battle and the movie is a major stretch on the truth but its remotely accurate. Just major changes for cinematics

They actually did put oil all over their bodys before they went to battle... And they actually were probably cut, and perhaps "big" for their day. Soldiers lived their lives to train.

Yes, but not in the fashion of how it went down in the movie.

There were really some 5000 greek soldiers, true about 300 from the state of Sparta -- led by Leonidas-- but there were many more soldiers on land for Greece. Also the exact number of Persians was fairly accurate (as far as size and sheer numbers). There was probably some 250k+ Persians; even as high as 1 million.

Leonidas was also killed very early on in battle. During one of the first battles, I believe.

and the line about returning home with your shield or upon it, was a real saying that was spoken to the soldiers by their ladies.

It's quite interesting to read about.

leonidas fought til the last battle. he died and the greeks and persians fought to retrieve the body. the persians eventually recovered it with the story that xerxes told his people to cut off leonidas's head and crucify his body.

No, he meant that after he died he would be remembered for all time as a traitor.

If I remeber right, this was kind of the ultimate insult he could tell Ephialtes. With the whole greatest glory a spartan could get is to die on the battlefield thing, if Ephialtes never died, he could never get his greatest glory.

It was because the spartans greatest honour was to die in battle and since the deformed guy wanted to be a spartan saying may you live forever is like a big fck you.

because it's an honor to die in battle as a spartan so he curses/insults him by telling him to live forever
