Exactly and the kind of range I need is going to cost in the hundreds as this place is pitch black at night with no street lighting and just one dudes landing light on screws with the whole night vision thin. Even the cops couldn't work with it.

You don't have a digital cam that you could put inside the car on night vision? Maybe borrow a couple cameras?

That would seriously be the only thing you could do. Little ****'s like this roam my parents neighborhood and vandalize all my parents stuff. There really isn't a whole lot you could do, unless you catch them in the act and confront the parents. The only strong evidence would be to catch the brat on camera...

It would need to be a big ****ing light to reach my car from the house.

Theres like grass at the front, then a walkway and then a huge grassy area and then a walkway again at the otherside and then the cars, and that's assuming I can park close to the front of my house.

Basically I don't do things that are:

a) Not possible
b) Cannot afford as in costing several hundred
c) Will cause problems for my family or friends in the street
d) Profit???

get a 2-way car alarm (those that page your remote if any sensor triggers), preferably with an RF remote (better range), put on a motion sensor module with the alarm, configure it so that when the motion sensor triggers it doesn't make any actual sound on the car, only on your remote. When you hear the remote beeping, run to your car and be prepared to catch him.

Permanent marker and the chemical I use to get it off with gradually fuks the paintwork. Also I found with my old car that even after cleaning, the acid in the marks gradually leave lines on the car as they etch away at it.

Use a whiteboard marker to take the permenant marker off. Just color over the permenant marker with the whiteboard marker and wipe it right off. Should be a lot easier on the paint.

As a revision to the first idea I posted, I think it would be a great idea to just leave a baby monitor under the car by a tire or something, where he can't see it. Then cover the ground around the car with something crunchy (dry leaves, potato chips, etc) and you'll be able to hear the clear crunch sound when he's around. He wouldn't realize the crunchy stuff was a trap and that you could hear it since the car is kind of far away. Then you could stealthily run out and grab him.

If you don't want to buy a camera, then I don't see what's wrong with this idea. It's the only other option you have, if you want to actually figure out who's doing this.
