Power Squat vs Free Squat

I was just wondering if using the Power Squat

is better than doing regular squats?

Is it pretty much the same to work the whole lower body? Is it any safer? I read that doing squats on the smith machine would cause dmage to the discs but i'm mainly using the power squat right now. Is it good?

first learn to squat. become an expert at them.

then later on in your life, utilize the power squat into your programs to have variety.

both work out the legs, but most successful people squat for legs

thanks. would it make a difference if I'm short though? i'm like 5'3 at 190lbs and I tend to go off balance with squats which is why i've turned to using power squats.

The Power Driver is an excellent squat variation. The only possible criticisms I have with it are that it's a bit of a strange angle and there's no balancing of the weight. But that being said, you can still build a lot of muscle with it. Look at how much muscle guys are able to build with leg presses and the Power Driver has a much greater range of motion. I say go ahead and use them. If nothing else, it keeps you from going stale with regular squats.

It's not necessarily better, but it is a nice substitute to provide some variation in a program. The angle and movement is pretty similar to that of specific strength athletes such as linemen, or rugby players.

A normal free squat requires so much more balance, coordination of muscle groups and concentration leading to more complete muscle gains. Especially if you're squatting correctly, and utilizing your hammies and glutes, I think you'd notice better size and definition.
