How much cardio is too much?( for fat loss)

    I am currently doing 12 sessions of cardio a week ( 30 minutes x 2 a day 6 days a week)

    Is this too much cardio?

How much cardio works for you?

What kind of heart rate should I maintain for pure fatloss?

How well do cross trainers work for you guys( like a elliptical)?

Thank you for the reply man. I was thinking of knocking 6 of those cardio sessions and replacing them with weight lifting sessions. Would anyone else do that or just do what is working for me?

    Your not doing weightlifting already?
Replace half the cardio with weightlifting, your metabolism gets faster when you have more muscle, and you wont just lose weight but your body will become a nice "toned" shape
Try 3 weightlifting workouts a week and 3 cardio workouts, see if fatloss gets faster (it probably will).

It is a myth that aerobic exercise is the best way to resculpt your body. Start lifting weights, and keep at least 3 days of aerobic exercise.

Hey my friend, it is easy for a skinny person to claim that aerobic exercising is not good, and that we don't need to do them. That's totally B.S. Fat people, obese people, people with low thyroid, people who get fat real easy even from eating 2 slices of pizzas or get bloated with bread, need to get off their asses *every day* and go for a walk, bikeride or jog at least 5 or 6 days a week.

Weight training is important, but you don't burn many calories at the gym. An hour of walking added to the weight training does wonder.

I get fat real easy, and I've noticed that if i only lift weights without aerobics, i would look like a football player. but if i do aerobics 5 to 6 days a week i look more like a bodybuilder, i get more chiseled and sculpted

My suggestion to you, is to hit the weight-training 2 times a week: you can do a full body workout twice a week. And hit the aerobic-exercises 6 days a week indeed, just like you are doing it: (30 minutes, 2 times a day, 6 days a week). Try to get a high protein, low carb diet too.

    Hey bud,

For the month of June I did half the month with just 1 hour of cardio (split between 30 min bike/stairmaster alternating and 30 min on the treadmill) then the other half with an hour of cardio morning and night. If anyone says losing weight through cardio is not sufficient, they have no clue what they're talking about. I lost close to 20 lbs in June alone.

It's all about consistency and making sure you up the level of difficulty to push yourself to lose more fat.

On top of that, I found myself losing more weight when I adjusted my diet as well. But yeah, as long as you are maintaining a good diet, everything will work out fine. If you can do the elliptical, that's good, I hate it, makes my knees feel weird.

If you don't like running that much, use a steady pace, high climb on the treadmill to get your heartrate going then jump on the bike or stairmaster then burnnn away.

Bottom line though, cardio's great for losing fat and too much cardio is relative to your body and its capabilities.

I wasn't saying that he shouldn't do cardio if that's what you thought I meant. But just that if he is going to workout, weight routines should be added (esp as this is a bodybuilding site), in the past few months I've seen amazing changes in my body from adding weightlifting, results that I wasn't seeing by just doing cardio. Just saying that weightlifting makes your body look different and more sculped than just cardio. And when he loses weight he will probably want to add some muscle eventually anyway.

Depends how much you're eating overall and how much of that is carbohydrates, and also depends what kind of intensity the cardio is.

How much cardio works for you?
Right now, I don't do any cardio, but I'm also on a very low calorie, low carb plan. I've also done as much as 5-6 hours per day with a 4,000-5,000 calorie intake and got results.

What kind of heart rate should I maintain for pure fatloss?

How well do cross trainers work for you guys( like a elliptical)?
The exercise isn't going to make or break a fat loss plan so don't worry about what heart rate to work at. Chances are, your weight is going to automatically limit how hard you can push anyway. As far as what type of cardio to do, whether you're using elliptical, treadmill, bike, arc trainer, versa climber, etc. not one of these "works" any better than the other. YOU are the one doing the work, so if you don't feel like you're working as hard on one machine as on another, you just push harder. The only difference between types of cardio is whether or not you like the particular activity, it's all personal preference.
