    Knee popped on squats

    Hey,

So, I was doing squats on a smith machine this morning (my gym doesn't have a rack..) and on the bottom of the movement (2nd set I think), I felt a little "crack" in my left knee and now it hurts when I'm going under paralell..

I immediatly stopped doing squats, now sure what to do next.. I was just going to give it a couple of days and see how it goes..

I would see your physiotherapist immediately. You may have damaged your knee.

    You're scaring me

I'll contact him tomorrow, the pain isn't as bad as it originally was, but better safe than sorry.

    Any other input ?

i had the same thing happen in college. i was on a squat machine and felt a pop in my right knee. it continued to hurt and i ended up at the doctor. i found out that i have a degenerative condition in my knee and have to wear a knee brace occasionally. as for you, give it a day or two and see a doctor if it doesnt improve.

If it's a torn ligament, but ligament tears are usually accompanied with loud pops, then he wouldn't want to put heat on it as it could increase swelling and pain.

Put Ice on it and elevate it until you can get to the doctor. I could walk on my knee after it happened, but the next day it was so unbearable and I coudn't move it.

i'm recovering from a serious knee injury and surgery...R.I.C.E. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. I'd get it x-rayed and then MRI'd to be safe so you dont ruin it it the future.

The 2nd time i injured my knee, i was walking on it the next day very gingerly, got it MRI'd and 2 days later found out i had a torn ACL.

It doesn't sound that serious, cuz when i got hurt, i was on the ground cussing and punching.

But just to be safe, you should get yourself checked before starting up again.

So, it's the next morning, it's not as painful as it was yesterday but still a little. I'll call a doc and see if he can see me quickly later.

Thanks, I'll try putting some ice on it.

I got an MRI of my legs not that long ago because of a surgery, nothing was wrong except what we fixed But I'm not 100% sure that it targeted the knee too.

If I could do it differently, I would. Maybe I should use the hack-squat machine ?

I'll elevate it as much as possible, as far as walking goes I have no problems. Still have to go to work

Yeah I definitly won't squat before I get it checked. As I said, I'm gonna call a "sports doctor" later on to see when she got some time.
That's the thing that sucks with loads of docs here, if you go to emergencies you pay more, don't see specialists and wait a lot. And if you take an appointment, sometimes they want to make you wait a month before they can see you :/

The Smith machine is not the reason for your injury.

Test your range of motion. Make sure you can bend your knee just as you could before the injury.

Ice and rest it over the next few days and if symptons don't improve, then see your doctor. Many times a knee will make a 'pop' without any real damage.

you def need to see a doctor tho, but in the future you might want to invest in some knee wraps, they cost about 16 bucks and during sqauts it takes almost all the pressure off your knees. and if you have knee problems i would def buy them

you can find good ones on bb.com

I don't think it's a ligament, because I can still move freely except when I squat down under parellel. I don't feel it when walking.

I know the smith isn't the reason, I've been doing squats for 6month ATG without any problems, might have placed my feets wrong with the smith ?
It hurts a little when I go under parallel, but not as bad as it did right after the pop. It's like healing slowly.
My knees often "pop" without any damage, but it wasn't exactly the same kind of feeling.

I never really had a knee problem, it's the first time it actually hurts.
I'll wait another day and ice it, if not fixed I'll call the doc. but he most probably will tell me not to squat/press for "insert amount of weeks here" and maybe he'll give me a wrap for it.

I suspect the popping was simply due to some slightly irregular cartilage (less than perfectly smooth) on the back of your patella (knee cap). A LOT of people have this and it's typically not a big problem.

Again, this is just a hunch, I'm not making a diagnosis.

That's what I was hoping for.

The pain is now almost gone, so I guess I'll give it another day or so with ice and elevation. I think I overreacted

Gonna go easy on mondays' leg day tho, don't want to do something wrong.

Sounds like you did overreact (hindsight is always 20/20, so I'm not trying to be smart). I really think that you just need to stretch some before doing squats and also some in between sets. It really saved my knees just to do a stretch where you stand and hold onto something and grab the top of your foot and pull the leg up behind you to touch your butt. I never thought it could be that simple but it did solve my own knee problems, and bad knees run in my family big time.

Quick bump to say that the pain is now gone, I'm still going to go easy on my next leg workout tho.

o/t: what's the best solution between smith-machine squats or hack-squat machine ? It's the only solutions I have to squat right now for at least a month
