your whole core, plus your legs, and shoulders (and everything else really), are all activated, to keep your body in a straight line. However if you let your midsection sag towards the ground, then I doubt they're really doing anything.-

not a lot but it does work it a little bit why not do exercises that target ur abs if u want to work them out leg raises crunches

Abs help as stabilizers, but that's all. So I wouldn't use pushups as an ab workout.
Just like the lats help stabilize the bench press. But you wouldn't be doing bench for your lat workout.--There are no stupid questions, just stupid people.

try going right into a set of pushups after doing a set or 2 back2back of crunches, v ups, etc.....then tell me if that doesnt work your whole abs...infact after the pushups go right back into some crunches or w/e and back into pushups.

If you wan't to get your abs in to better shape, then you should do ab exercises. Push ups and many different compound exercises work your abs, but you really can't say they'r effective when compared to ab exercises.www.butt-exercises.net - Butt exercise

I think yes, pushups work on abs too... the major parts that get the benefit are the shoulders and your forearm but to a certain extent they do work on your abs.Check out my progress and how I went from 157lbs to 191lbs in 9 months..

Push Ups work your abs by strengthening your core.
One of my favorite exercises is doing push ups on a stability ball http://www.best-abs-exercises.com/fi...exercises.html
I like to do it at the end of my ab workout to really fatigue the abs.

Really all exercises work the abs and core. Push-ups would work them more-so than say curls but less than deadlifts.

Yes! I did the p90x chest video and my abs were sore for 3 days after, more then my chest was...

like above, almost every exercise hits your midsection somewhat, just keeping a straight back.

part of my lower abdominal regime includes elevated push ups and they certainly work for me. As nillo says keep a straight back as if you don't it will have the wrong effect on your lower abdominal

Yeah, they do... but, you're going to need to make it significantly harder on your abs to get any kind of development from them.
Add weight, or modify the exercise. Or better yet, do other exercises for your abs.A man can only be beaten in two ways: if he gives up, or dies.

Push ups work great for your whole core if done correctly.
