    TSA brand weights

I just bought a set of plates (and it came with the bar) from Sports Authority today. The sale price was $145 and some change with a 25 off coupon from the sale paper. $145 for 300 lbs. of weights. This is the cheapest deal I have seen ever. Now of course I've been thinking that they must be completely **** of they are that cheap. Well I opened the boxes and there were some minor scratches and paint flaws but I don't give a flying **** for about .50 cents per lb.

Does anyone else have these weights and what are your opinions about them?

They are just your average ecomony plate, nothing premium. For the price including bar its a good deal.

5 years ago they were only $100 for the set, cost of steel is up a lot
the economy sets are the best deal for most guys, you are better off buying several economy sets, dumping the crappy bars and spending $100 or so on a decent 1000lb test bar, if you lift heavy
premium plates are in the $.75 / lb range and up, and the only real difference is accuracy and finish, but I've never had a cheap plate off by more than 1/2 - 1 lb

I dig the TSA grip plates. Those are the most bang for the buck in new sets hands down. What's up with the odd price though? They should have been $159.99 minus the $25 off coupon. The regular price is $259.99 now I think.

Commodities are all sky rocketing due to the high cost in fuel esp. in transporting weight.

I believe they are 209.99 now. On sale sometimes at 169.99 (at least here in NOVA). Depending on which store you go to you can use a $25 dollar coupon they sometimes send in the weekly ads.

I wish I had picked up a couple sets when I worked there in HS. It would've been $60 bucks after employee discount for the 300lb sets.

    Couldn't agree more!

I have over 1000lbs in economy plates like that. Weight is weight. Unless you are in an olympic powerlifting competition, than maybe I would opt for the expensive one. Even then I don't know if it would really be necessary. But definitely, like ctg said, spend some money on a quality bar. Those bars are not so great. Do a search on this forum for bars and I'm sure you will come up with some very good advice/opinions.
