Post Had a major car accident (serious replies only)

So I had to drive to another state to pick up some documents related to my work. It was about an hour's drive. Now, I barely slept the previous day and my eyes could not stay open for long. Next thing you know I was cruising on 50 and dozed off without realizing it. Then, WHAM! I ram into the car ahead of me and both the front airbags burst open, the dashboard cracks, the front window cracks and about 3 feet of the front of the vehicle got smashed right in (the chassis and engine were seriously damaged). Luckily, I was wearing my seat belt and nothing serious happened to me... except that now I got this chest pain, due to the impact of the airbag. Its the 3rd day since the accident and the pain is still there. I havent visited the doc just yet, but as stupid as this sounds, I am worried that the doc's gonna tell me that I would have to take a break from the gym for a while.

All I wanna know is, has anyone else have this happen to him/her and did it affect your workout regime? I am definitely gonna pay a visit to the doc, but I know general paediatrics would suggest that I stopped working for a long time. Its pissing off that this happened, just when I was making some progress. Your thoughts?

Yeah dude, fractured/broken ribs pretty much means you can't work out. You should get checked out for internal bleeding and ****. Good Luck.
It's a lot better to take a break from training than to injure yourself further, possibly making it impossible for you to train at all.

atleast your okay dude lets start there.

when i flipped my veh about 3 imes into a 10 foot ditch i had bruises all up and down my thighs and took about 2 weeks off. luckly that was the only thing that happened to me.

Taking the time off may be better for you than rushing back and causing more damage to your body. Let it heal and rest your body. I gurantee you will come back stronger and more mentally prepared to go in to the weight room.

Take what the doc gives you and stick to that advice...chance are he knows what hes talking about. Again just be glad your still here and didnt cause serious damage to another person, that may be worse than hurting yourself.

see a doctor..taking a little bit off wont hurt you that much, and knowing for sure that you are injured or alright from your doc will save you a lot more time later if you continue to stress and work your injury, which could cause a much more serious injury

I have had a fractured rib and it only took me out of training for a few weeks and I was still able to do some stuff.

The problem is that if you do have a fracture somewhere it will only get worse with working out. So time to face the possible truth I'm afraid. Prolly just bruising anyway, can take days to go down.

Edit: Sorry to hear about the crash BTW.

Well it's likely it's just bruising from the impact of the airbag and tightening of the seat belt, but you should seriously get it checked out.

bro, you really should go to a doctor and get checked out... just to be safe. Hopefully it's nothing serious, but if it happens that you have to take a break from working out for a little while, you gotta do what you gotta do. Just do it and then get back in there and get back to hitting the weights. That's all you can really do. Sometimes things happen, man.

Airbags cause injuries all the time, but airbag's a lot better than the steering wheel/windshield bro. Get in for an x-ray. If you need a break take it, you'll regret it later.

Hey man, that sucks dude. Numerous times I have driven being sleepy and I remember I put the music REALLY loud and slap myself to keep me awake.

But on a serious note, I think you should go see a doctor just in case so I agree with you there. You might feel a bit normal apart from the chest pains, but I would highly suggest you go to a doctor/paediatrics asap (specially due to the chest pains) and see what they say.

On the surface it doesn't sound too serious as you might be bruised from the pressure of the seatbelt and the airbag. But yeh, see what the doc says so you can at least eliminate other potential probs which can occur due to high impact. Hope you get well and I am sure you will be fine and be able to continue your workouts soon (as they say better to be safe than sorry).

Hope for the best, possibly you just bruised some ribs. But its good your going to the doc for a real examination, might be some problems that you are unaware about. Sucks about the car accident, but vehicles can be replaced, thats what insurance is for.

Wait to see what the doc says the problem is and go from there, use your best judgement when comming to exercise when injured, don't push yourself if you know something is broken/fractured or any other internal injuries, if its bruising be selective with what you do, maybe utilising machines that do isolation work might be best till your healed.

This is along the lines of asking if you should take a protein shake with you when you have to have surgery.

Yeah, I was in a pretty big accident in '04 I think. Got t-boned by an oversized GMC going about 50. Broke my collar bone, my arm, and tore my rotator cuff. The worst part of the accident was the fact that I could smell the airbag powder for days.

I was out for quite some time from the gym. When I came back I started off relatively slow (went from 5x5 to an 8rep 3 set scheme) for about a month or so, then went back to normal routine. Muscle memory kicked in and I was back to where I started around 90 days back in the gym.

Exclamation As others have said . . .

It could be a cracked sternum and/or ribs. Get ur ass to the doc.

Besides ur health, its also important from an insurance/legal standpoint to document the extent of ur injuries due to the crash.

Missing some workouts should be the least of ur concerns right now.

I'd give it a few days rest to make sure nothing is amiss. I rolled my car back in 2003 and I thought I was fine (apart from the seatbelt cutting into my shoulder)
3 days later I was admitted to hospital with chest pains, lukily it was only a bruised diaphram, but internal bleeding can occur days after the accident so I'd get checked out asap.
