cutting weight
i was just reading about cutting weight and i thought of this post. i have hit the weights hard the last year and added alot of size finally. but now i am training MMA again i am down to 215. what do you guys think cut to 185 or try 205 for once i actually have to make a decision by tommorow. i am a little out of fighting shape and ultimately want to stay at MW but for now its up in the air you guys think i can cut 30 pounds in a month or so?

it depends. if you think you will still be stronger at MW even with your strength loss from the cut than the average middleweight then try to hit MW. It's a toss up really. In the future if you want to fight MW i'd try to stay closer to your fighting weight. That will help your metabolism adapt to a caloric intake at a certain weight and you'll get more comfortable at that 'lean weight.' Hope that makes sense

thanks man i follow alot of your stuff you are a stand up guy. i appreciate your imput and value it alot. yeah i want to stay at around 200 205 tops for my future fights for MW. i think i may fight this time at 205. im the type of person who dosent get much stronger the bigger i am. i am lucky that way in a bodybuilding sense where my muscle fill out more with higher reps so maybe that will save me.. when i train for bodybuilding i train for muscle appearance more then anything. now im shifting more for strength and endurance. how would you make the transition?

honestly I would mix in some powerlifting training with the typical MMA circuit training you see so much of. As long as your joints are healthy and you aren't a few weeks out from a fight, powerlifting could really help your strength/power. After TUF, marcus davis did some powerlifting and he said it really helped him out.
If you are interested I'd check out some stuff on westside barbell, alot of their articles are complex, but if you do some searching you can find some basic routines.

go for 205 if it is 5 week. 5lbs a week is bound to make you loose around 2-3 lbs of muscle total in the 5 weeks. That is endurence out the window right there. If it was 2 months to make 185, then go for it. A.Silva walks around 200-205 and fights 185. There are some people at my gym that walk 210 and fight 185 but they only fight 2-3 times a year so the dont destroy their bodies by cutting so much weight all the time.
go fer 205

not bad. I simulated a 5 day cut to 135 not too long ago and i missed weight by 1 lbs.
I was jus messing around and i had pizza one day. Wrestling helps me know my limits and my body very well. I am also 19 lol. It wasfrom around 151 to 136 is what i got to. I was super dehydrated, so i have to work on that. I was thinking supping l-glutamine would help with my electolyte blanance when i cut. So i will try that in september.
Wrestlers are mad scientists at cutting weight cuz we do it for months at a time lol

well trying to drop that much weight in 30 days is very rough and may even make u weak when it comes time to fight. Fighting at 205 and then dropping down and making a few test cuts to 85 would be good. If it is a weight u know u can make no problem then go for it.. but almost everyone in their career have started at a class above what they fight now.. Franklin started at HW, Machida at HW, Riggs started at SHW lol. I dunno, i think cutting 30lbs in a month is just rushing it and may effect your performance alot..

I just don't understand why you would put in the iron work (no pun intended) to get up to 215 and then try to cut back down to 185. I'd either fight at 205 or not walk around so big.

I don't think "assload" is French, lol!
To OP, 5 weeks isnt alot of time to get down to 185, especially if you're fairly solid. You can bet on holding a good 10-15 lbs of water weight at your size, but that's fluid that your body needs and you will absorb it all back immediately, so that's weight that wont stay off for very long. That means the other 15 or so pounds has to be muscle loss or quality fat loss.
I'd recomend 205 with the time frame you've got right now. I trained for a wrestling tournament last summer on short notice and went from 219 to 202 in 3 days, with the intention of sweating the last bit out the night before to make 197, but the tournament was canceled. After I got over the pissed offedness of doing all that and not getting to compete, I realized I woulda got whooped anyways. I was sooo drained. Just because you CAN make the weight, doesnt mean you SHOULD. My story woulda been alot different if I had more time to cut properly, but it just seems to me that 30 pounds would tax your system alot.

re-hydrating properly is also something you need to be aware of. No sport drinks.

Whats the most weight you have ever cut? That should play a role in your decision. The top guys make the type of cut your talking about all the time but if you arent used to it and dont have knowledgable council on how to properly cut then dont do it. Filho, Franklin, Silva, Marqardt, Lindand all make this kind of cut. At 5'11 your probably more suited for 185 but if you have to cut 20 lbs to do it then maybe you should stick to 205 until you lose more bodyfat.

You will weaken yourself cutting that much so soon. I've seen some of the guys I've cornered and trained with perform badly when they cut down too much. What is the sense of fighting at a weight where you won't perform at your best? What is the sense of starting with a bad record or looking like you are dragging yourself through a match?
The ranks of heavies are very thin, and the chances of getting more fights and doing better are there in the heavies. If you cut to lower weights, you will find ranks loaded with a lot of guys and give you a lot more competition.
