My husband and I live in Waldorf but we both work in Arlington. I work at the Pentagon for DoD and he is a Detective for Arlington County Police Department.
My advice is learn the metro!!
Good luck! Where will you be working and living?

I can't wait for the day we can leave this place in the dust! I'm not a city person and hate how long it takes to go everywhere. You have the perfect mindset to come here. There is lots to do, but everything is expensive and over priced (imo).
Nothing but luck on the move and getting situated!!

ha ha, I've been here 6 years now and I'm still trying to find them ;-)
Hopefully you will have a good work environment and meet some good people there or probably at the gym. Have you found a gym yet?

Richmond, VA here...sorry to say I HATE IT (New York transplant) Arlington (I believe) has had alot of development and is closer to D.C. which should make it a more "progressive" town! Good luck there! As far as friends...well...I've been here to 2 yrs and NO friends as of yet...I think my New York state of mind is too much for the dear dear people of Richmond!

Trying not to hyjack ... but I'm in Spotsylvania. Not too far from Richmond. I actually get 2 of my cars serviced on Broad St .. just up from Short Pump.
Are there any good comedy clubs in that area you could recommend ??

Welcome back to Virginia! Too bad you're in NOVA though. I feel sorry for the sheer amount of idiots that you are going to run into, although we do have our fair share in Va Beach.

Yeah NOVA!
Since you'll be in Arlington, I recommend Golds because they have quite a few there.
It's too bad you're far from Lifetime Fitness. It's a 24 hour gym and it's GORGEOUS.
I haven't met very many idiots here so don't worry! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to make any real friends because my life style differs from most of the people at my school, but nearly everyone I have spoken to in NOVA is friendly. The gym definitely sounds like a great place to meet people who you have something in common with. Good luck, OP!

I would go with Gold's too. The one in Clarendon is nice. Haven't been to any of the other's. I will ask the hubby what he thinks is the best over near Moore Street.

Yeah, Arlington isn't too bad, but the people around Alexandria and closer to D.C. kind of irk me.

I don't live in Arlington. I go to school in Fairfax, so that's basically all I come into contact with. Oddly enough, most of the people attending my school are not from the NOVA area, they're all about 2-3 hours south.

I wish you the best! I think Virginia is beautiful, and you can't beat being a half hour or so from DC!

Hey, my story is a bit similar. I spent almost all of my life in the Philadelphia area. The economy there is not as bad as Michigan, but its also been going downhill for years and taxes still kept going up. I suspected my company was going to be downsizing and moving jobs down south, so before I got caught in the tornado, I posted for and got a similar job in Texas three years ago with the company paying ALL of my moving expenses (and I was right. Six months later, my department in PA was cut by 30%). That position ultimately didn't work out long term, but it led to my current position in Richmond. I live in its western suburbs.
I think its more expensive where you are in the northern part of the state, but compared to Pennsylvania and even Houston, the cost of living in Richmond is much lower ( housing, food costs, insurance, gasoline), so financially I am much better off. It is much quieter here than the big city, but after years of hustle and bustle and congested roads, I like the slower quieter pace. The air here is also much cleaner. The people here are generally much nicer and it doesn't hurt that I have a great boss!
