Soon to be Police Officer.

Hi all! Still somewhat new here. Here is my situation, I am a full time criminal justice student, full time mother of four, three teenage boys and one girl whom thinks she is a teenager, lol. I graduate next June in 09. I am finally nearly reaching my childhood dream of becoming a Police Officer. The whole process of being a Police Officer is quite lengthy. A 6 month process. Only one part of the process has me a little concerned, the physical endurance part. I must be able to run 1.50 miles in 15 min., no problem use to run marathons. Lift 50% of my body weight, problem. Do 40 situps in 3 minutes, problem, Do 40 pushups in 3 minutes, problem. So, I am out of shape a tad bit, which I have been working on, running 3 miles a day. The whole weight lifting thing is just not my favorite thing. Someone was helping me awhile back, a guy on here and it was working, then I lost interest. If anyone has and advice on starting and staying with it, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks All!

I would think if you want to become an officer that badly, that would be all the motivation you need.

x2...

In all honesty, ya just gotta get in there and "do it". It's not going to come any other way, so best not to lose any time. Take it a little bit at a time, and before you know it, you'll wonder why you didn't start sooner.

Remember, it won't happen overnight. Stay dedicated, even when it seems impossible.

Good luck!

Hi crimijuswoman,

I would suggest both a strong regiment of strength training and running. Running does not seem to be an issue with you - you have done a marathon before, it's just a matter of gaining that cardio strength back! Of course, you don't need to be a marathon runner. I would suggest interval training, since that is what most PT is geared towards (most dog tracks and foot pursuits don't last more then 5-6 blocks).

Most important is strength training. You WILL get your butt kicked in PT. I would suggest the same weight training as any man - and keep building, keep consistent!! Lift heavier and heavier! Focus on building the upper body.

If you have any more specific questions, ask me. I have tons of great material for academy training, I work a desk job in a police department but I do the same physical tests (for ?fun?).

Try doing crossfit workouts. 2-3 x a week and you'll be smoking that PT test in no time.

Been There Done That

crimijuswoman, The goal is just to pass. I have a little experience in this area, I am certified in LA, GA, OR, NJ, VA and MS. I also had 4 kids when I got into law enforcment. And was over 30... no muscle....run ha

What I have always done was to work on the items your going to be tested on. Do pushups through the day several sets, if you can't do any then start with pushups on the wall. Do the full sit ups when practicing not just crunches.

And there right if you want to do it bad enough you will be self motivated-- That may sound bitchy..... But you have to be a little on the special side to walk the blue line. Good luck and go for it girl!!!

I don't have a problem with that, I WILL become a police officer one way or the other no doubt in my mind regarding that. I was just needing perhaps advice on keeping things fresh and staying on track with weight lifting, but thanks.

Hope I didn't come off as a beaach. The only thing I can say is just change things up. Do what you enjoy and hopefully that will help keep you motivated to continue. If you have the money maybe hire a personal trainer. If you've put money into it your not going to want to throw that away.

In my state you do not need a degree to become a police officer, however it gives you that little bit of extra edge. I graduate next June, with my associates in Criminal Justice. I hope to have a job by then waiting so I can go ahead to the acedemy.
