$4 a gallon, lets say you get 28 miles per gallon... thats $0.14 a mile... wear and tear on the car is more subjective...

For example if you drive your car to a business function and the trip is 100 miles tomorrow the company pays you:
100 * .505 = $50.50
The rates change next month.

Not sure, but I work for public health and that is the rate they have to pay should I have to travel for training sessions and whatnot.
I'd def look into it.

I get .505/mile based on 2000 miles/month up front. If I go over 2000 miles, I get reimbursed for that too.
The bad thing is if I do not cover 2000 miles per month, the shortage gets added back in as income at the end of the year.

I work for a state govt agency and I believe we are at 41 cents per mile. Private business might be more inclined to calculate it according to the IRS rate. Regardless the .32 seems quite low

Those figures aren't mandated rates that employers have to compensate you at. You could certainly argue with your employer that this is a fair rate sicne the governement has established it though. But there are a few sites that track the average operating costs of a vehicle and I don't believe they factor in gas. So you figure your gas mileage and you should break even which seems fair, unless you can factor in market depreciation due to mileage.

That's mine currently. $0.32 is low, especially compared to the current federal rate which just increased.
