    Not if you have the proper set up, which it sounds like you don't... and half squats are never a good idea.

    You certainly need a squat rack of some kind. You cant lift heavy with squats without it because you'll have nowhere to go if you get into trouble. You cant really spot squats.

    Having said all that - if you are really new to this - lower weight and higher reps with GOOD FORM will give you some good early development and increase your strength. The trouble will be getting the bar on your back!

    You need strong bomb-proof squat stands with built in catchers. If the stands don't have catchers for the weight(to save your life if you get into trouble), then you can use plasterers trestles as portable power racks.

    The above would cost very little if you go secondhand.

    Even better would be a proper power rack.

    Don't ever trust a human spotter!
