I know this is probably a stupid question but these new hi tech supplements haven't been around forever. I have read so many post about supplements and the opinions are like snowflakes. How effective are they or is it mainly a marketing game?
I have also read alot about creatine and it seems to be a legite supplement but, they are also many pro's and con's on the opinions of creatine as well.
Can't you get the same results from proper diet and lifting?
It seems to me that most everyone wants to get the results of using steroids without the cost and dangers of using and oh yea, they are an illegal substance.
I don't want to piss anybody off but I am just curious.

Yes . It's just that most of us are looking for any edge we can get, within reason. Here's what I use and why:
Whey- simply a convenient and fast acting/digesting protein. Ideal for PWO and/or meeting daily protein intake goal. And it is a food, technically...I guess .
NO products - simply expensive caffeine and CEE to me, but I use it anyway. Why? Because I can afford it and it's just become part of my pre-w/o ritual . I also use caffeine caps. Caffeine has been used for centuries and has benefits when used properly.
Multivitamin - I only take these every other day.
BCAAs - I use them mainly when I step up cardio to prevent burning muscle. If I were "bulking" I wouldn't use them, as they'd be plenty provided in natural foods (and the whey).
Fish oil - People of all ages and non-BBers use fish oil for the health benefits numerous studies have shown.
That's it for me. But again, if I couldn't afford to buy them I wouldn't lose any sleep. Just looking for any edge I can get ."If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

I think almost everything in the vitamin stores is a waste of money. I use a few supplements that have credible research supporting their efficacy:
Vitamins
Whey
Fish Oils
MSM and Glucosamine for joint support
Glutamine
Arginine
Kre-Alklyn
Juice Plus as an insurance policy since I dont eat many fruits and vegetables
Pretty much everything else that works is illegal.Dr Smo

Supps have been around forever......they just mainly used to be liver tabs &, least I remember, anything Bob Hoffman out of York, PA........York Barbell Co.....sold....I think Hoffman ran Strength and Health mag., I remember something called 'Tiger's Milk'.....probably a precursor to Muscle Milk. I remember in the '70s buying a gallon can of 'Muscles Now' from a local BB'er...whey, gainer or whatever....; 'now' never arrived.
If you can afford the basics listed in the other above posts, fine; otherwise, plow the money into good food and consistent balls busting hard work....a lot different from 'diet and lifting'.

Yes, thats the angle I'm taking this year. I figure food is for life. May as well start practicing proper nutrition now.
I have also been down the supplement road for a while and it's very misleading. There might be a few good ones out there, but I'm not going to waste my time anymore trying to find it. When I grab a green pepper, it's going to be a green pepper. When I grab a supplement, I have to hope these people are not taking me for a ride.
Good luck on your decision.

Before I got into supplements I used to just bring those cartoned egg whites and a bagel for my post workout protein and carbs.

Its true eugene lived 1867-1925.
AAS was invented in the mid 1930's.
Really was not used widely until the 1950's from most of the research
I have done over the years.Last edited by ntrllftr; 06-20-2008 at 03:37 AM.

"he began his career as a sideshow "strongman". Early in life, and with the help of showman Florenz Ziegfeld, Sandow decided it wasn't enough to simply demonstrate his strength, but to actually display his muscular physique as though it were a work of art. He soon made his "Muscle Displays" the main feature of his stage show."
