Hoodia is actually a plant that only grows in Africa, and was used by natives in Africa during long journeys in order to keep their mind off hunger.
What it does is that it releases hormones in the body to make your mind think you are "full." In turn, your appetite is suppressed. If you get the pure Hoodia and not a supplement with Hoodia plus other ingredients, you may or may not feel the full effects of what it does.
I've had friends use it, and they ate less than half of what they normally would at a meal. They would make themselves eat because they needed the energy. I've heard ups and downs about it, but never have tried it myself.
