my 17year old son and my protein
Caught him today mixing a protein shake with chocolate syrup. He's 6'2" and weighs about 150lbs. so you can imagine what kind of motabolism he has. He's lifting weights at school for football. Is the syrup a bad idea or what? I think it is. I think he's wasting the protein. he needs to get it from a natural source instead of taking my supplements. besides he's 17. I might just be selfish with my supps. His diet sucks. What do you guys think? Should I let him have a couple of protein shakes?

Adding chocolate syrup isn't going to effect the protein. In other words, it's not wasted at all. Sure, as long as you don't mind him using your expensive supps, let him have at it. My 19yr old buys his own now....finally!

No.....
If he is 17 and lifts he needs more of a gainer type product than anything.
Cyto Gainer has about 600 calories per serving, plus 54g of protein....
He also needs to eat TONS of whole foods....

Nothing inherently wrong with drinking whey protein at 17. My kids all started as soon as they were born. Not from a cow, obviously.
Seriously, it's just a processed milk product. A 10 year old I know has hyperglycemia and the doc suggested taking protein shakes to school to drink with and between meals to help regulate blood sugar.
Syrup may not be the best but at 150lb anything he is doing to add calories is probably a good idea, as long as his diet isn't all refined sugar.

The protein powder isn't bad for him. Heck..if I recall back...there is whey in baby food. Sure real food is better for him...but it's better for all of us. If he is that lean at that height I don't think it's a terrible thing for him to take if you can get over paying for him to take it.

I would wonder if a slower digesting protein would be better than whey

Make him eat some food. A lot of good food.

You might want to look into a collegiate formulated product. Seems a few years back there was a major issue with young adults in college sports trying to compete by relying too heavily on supplements. Now there are specific supps just for college level athletes that have extra nutritional value. If his diet is that rough, and getting him to grub up on real food, maybe this is a potential aid?
Cytosport has a supp line that is specifically for college athletics.

I started taking whey when I was 15, along with tons of eggs, milk, chicken and beef.
Get him onto 4K worth of calories a day, at least, and have him shoot for 300g of protein a day, at least!
Also, make him get a job so he can help you buy protein and stuff. If you two are both taking enough on it, buy it in bulk and save money...
