    MMA fighters and pecs

Anyone notice that alot of MMA fighters have really none-symetrical pecs compared to the rest of their physique? Either pecs dont play an important role in grappling and punching, or the combination of grappling and striking deosnt allow proper pectorial developtment.

Some fighters who have unproportional pecs are
Tito Ortiz, Forest Griffin, Brandon Vera, Tim Sylvia, etc

Also my striking instructors in my gym all have big arms, but miniscule pecs.

anyone know why or notice this aswell?>

Useless in MMA. Basically having big pecs would mean another muscle(s) to fill with oxygen, and they need all oxygen they can get. Since pecs dont really play a roll in grappling or boxing or anything, its pretty pointless.

Pecs are pretty much just for show, they really have very little real world application when it comes of fighitng. Think of the typical movments we use to work the pecs ( bench press etc ) when do you think you will ever duplicate those exact movements in a fight?

Things like abs, shoulders, etc play far more of an important role in grappling and in punching especially.

Which is actually easier to counter with underhooks, which then becomes a pulling motion.

pecs are used a lot in MMA

but other muscles are used much more frequently. there are great strikers with small and large pecs, same goes for grapplers. for striking you need pec strength but too big of pecs gets in the way, gives less leverage, shorter reach etc (ex. sherk @ 170)

I'm no MMA fighter, or a general figher.. but just by moving your arm in the general direction of a hook causes some movement in your pecs. So i'm guessing that it still plays a role in fighting, whether it being a big one or not.

    Pecs

I think it comes down to MMA fighters training for their sport rather than muscular development, if they do not have naturally well developed pecs they do not target them in the same way a bodybuilder would target an under developed muscle.

correct but having huge BBworthy pecs allows less flexability and dexterity involved in striking.

and too all those saying pecs arent used in strikes... wtf chuck liddels drunk-redneck-style-overhand-right is pretty much all pecs/traps/shoulders.

If you're throwing punches incorrectly then yes, they would play a larger role.

all the power comes from the back pushing the arm down. the only thing you do with your pecs/traps/shoulders is move your arm up.

    It's a karate strike called the kote-uchi.

So is it his traps or his pecs that make his waist turn? Chuck himself said he lets his arm relax and swings with his body.

Okay, so if the pecs are unimportant in MMA, why do I see people doing bench press or dumbbell press (like GSP, for instance).

Oh yeah, and I'm a noob in punching, but isn't a straight punch liken to a pushing movement like a one-arm pushup?

Also the exercises typically used to build the pecs don't have a whole lot of carry over to combat sports. If your a fighter and do a lot of bench pressing and push ups, you're not really doing an exercise that's specifically gonna enhance performance for your sport.

A lot of fighters still do chest exercises though. I still do some incline presses and push ups, but I don't think its helping my fighting, I just like having jacked pecs !

I thought pushups were integral for any fighter's training regimen. So, what muscles are utilized in punches?

Some fighters who have unproportional pecs are
Tito Ortiz, Forest Griffin, Brandon Vera, Tim Sylvia, etc

Also my striking instructors in my gym all have big arms, but miniscule pecs.

anyone know why or notice this aswell?>

I suspect that it is because MMA fighters are NOT bodybuilders, and they are not concerned about symmetrical pec development. I would assume that their training is focused on building speed and power rather than size.

    Just a guess.

My pec's are really underdeveloped compared to most of my upper body also. But I dont target out chest exercises either. Chest muscles dont give you a hard punch lol. lots of noobs think cause your arm is pushing out in a punch it's your chest making the power cause bench pressing and **** is "pushing out". not true at all.

Lat's,core and legs are what you need in mma.

Well, now that I think about it, I think they still develop the pecs in order to protect their body from body shots, and not necessarily to pack a stronger punch.

it's more important to be preportioned. its fine to have small pecs, unless you have a huge back.
