Pull up bar wall space?
How much clearance do i need between the wall and a pull up bar?
If i but this on a 2X4 on the wall will I have enough clearance? That would bring it up to about 7". Will that be enough?

Any other chinning solutions would be greatly appreciated.

My gut tells me that isn't gonna work. The best place to do pullups is on the pullup bar in the front of your power rack.

I wouldn't trust those bars. It can easily rip out of the wall, especially if you cannot find studs to fasten it in.

I was planning on putting a 2x4 on top of the stud. Then attach the bar. Not really worried about finding the studs. My stud finder is dead on accurate.

Have enough clearance so you can comfortably grip it and avoid any contact with the elbows when you pull.

+1...even if you did find a stud I'd be cautious in using one

7'' would not be enough for me, I like lots of space.
Try this out, it holds me solid at @ 225...the wood, pipe, and pipe joints/fixtures cost about $35 at the hardwear store.
*Attach two 2x4's perpendicular to 2 studs above a door jam. Space out the 2x4's, one being over the door jam and the other about 8'' above. Leave enough room to clear the bar with your chin (you could do this on a wall if the door jam is too close to the ceiling).
*on the top piece of wood, attach a 3 peice metal pipe that will be the pull up bar and 2 pieces that extend from the wall to your desired distance. Then fix stabilizing bars, with a 3 slot joint) that extend down to the lower 2x4. You can get creative and play around with how far your bar sticks out, just be sure to have the stabilizing bar be at a good angle.
* I attached the 2x4's to the studs with long wood screws, 4 at each point (16 total). The pipe was attached to the wood with bolts extending through fixed with a nut, which means I made holes in the drywall behind the wood. But you could probably just use screws maybe...

If you don't attach it to studs, it WILL pull out of the wallboard.

3.5-4" lag bolts using predrilled holes to avoid splitting of the wood would have no problems holding the weight. Just make sure you hit atleast 2 different studs.
7" doesnt seem like much space.

It would drive me nuts. Even if it is enough room, and it barely might be, I would go crazy that close to the wall.
