Friday night I went with two buddies and my girlfriend over to our local bar area for some bar hoping. We went into this low key sushi place that had an outside bar and a small live band playing. I had the first round and I went up and got 4 miller light bottles and told the girl working behind the counter to close it (not to keep the tab open). Because we were going to have the first beer there then do some bar hoping down the street. She closes it and gives me my receipt and it was $12 dollars and some change for 4 bottles of miller light. I write in a 1 dollar tip and write the new total the on the line beneth it.
So i get online this morning to check my online banking and i see the $13 something (with tip included) I signed for and then I see another charge for 1.38. I never went to the bar after and I wasn't even drunk at the time so I know what she did.
Obviously she thought her 6 seconds she spend popping the top off 4 twist off miller lights was worth more than the dollar I gave her so she re ran my card numbers after I left to give herself an additional 1.48 . Ive already called today and took care of it but its still pissing me off.
From now on im paying with cash at bars and im honestly tempted to just be a complete ass an leave nothing for them.
Cliffs -
-Not drunk
-place wasnt very busy
-bought 4 miller light bottles
-tipped 1 dollar
-girl thought her 6 seconds in popping off the twist off caps was worth more than the dollar i tipped her
-she charged my card an additional 1.48 on top of the 1 dollar i left her
-appearantly she's so good she deserves 2.50 for opening 4 bottles of miller light.

She was probably mad that you stiffed her (by tipping 8 percent). So after talking **** on you and pointing you out as a cheapskate to the other wait staff, she ran your numbers again to bring the tip up to 20 percent to rectify the wrong.
Didn?t you know that you are supposed to tip at least 20 percent in all situations? If someone hands you a $500 bottle of champagne, you must tip them at least $100.

Was it a separate charge? Or was it all one charge that was more than you wrote it for?
When you first run a credit card at a restaurant or bar, it charges the bill plus twenty percent to ensure the money is there for a good tip. Then you sign your slip, a server puts the ACTUAL tip in (in your case, a crappy one), and when the establishment settles the batch, it deposits that amount back into your account and takes out the correct amount.
Hotels do this too, they hold an extra two hundred sometimes in case of damage to the room. its standard practice and perfectly legal.

It was ****ty of you to leave her a dollar, but if it makes you feel better she's more than likely going to lose her job over this.
Also, I see a lot of hostility towards the tipping system in here, that's pretty common for this age demographic, and that is why this demographic often gets really poor service. I know when I was serving I hated waiting on tables of guys our age, it was always a ****ty tip.Last edited by GApump; 06-03-2008 at 07:47 AM.

I bartend and I get this kind of tips all the time from retards. It's even worse when it's somehting like 2 margaritas, a white russian or martinis because the take time and you have to shake and mix them.
If someone gets a beer and doesn't tip the next time the get one I will say it's $3 and if they give me $3 exact I put the whole thing in my tip jar. I need my tips.
Usaully the right thing to do is $1 for every mixed drink you order $1 for every 2 beers."what do u mean wow , its not white knighting, not even close" - Shay14's comments on Giving DMB $60 to buy a car - lulz

I have acutally had this happen to me:
TAB $17.00
TIP $ 8.00
Total = $25.00
The bartender put a 1 in front of the 8 to take it 18 so my account was charged $35.00 .. I contacted the bar they fixed it, that was acutally her last night is guess so she screwed allot of people I am sure. So what I do now is put a dollar sign $ really close to the tip and total and havn't had a problem since.

I don't make the rules bro, I think its ridiculous for restaurants to pay their servers 2 bucks an hour. If I had it my way they'd pay them a normal wage and eliminate tipping, but that isn't the case. I worked for tips for a few years and made a lot of good money doing it, in most cases I made a lot more than I deserved for the effort that was put forth. I'm just saying if you're not going to tip you're probably not going to get tip top service, especially as a repeat customer.

the reason the place you went only charges 3 dollars a drink is because they pay their bartender under 4 dollars an hour. If its not busy shes not making any money and youre buying drinks for 4 people, you couldnt just throw her an extra buck or 2? Also who scams a credit card for a dollar? just because she chargers your card doesnt mean she gets a tip so not sure how shed benefit by this. Did she charge ot for a dollar and add 1.47 as the tip? does she own the bar because if not she doesnt just get to charge yer card and have it go into your bank account, she only receives whats on the tip line after they do a cashout. Ive worked with many cc machines and thats the only way you could do it....

use your head dumbass. Their is less mark up because the establishment pays the employee's less, meaning the employee's should/have to work to a good/great level to earn income from the customer ie you. That is why you, Americans, have a tipping system in place. How do I know this? My uncle lives in America and have talked to exchange students who say the same thing.

5 seconds of service with a smile worth more than $1?
Definately not.
A waiter, waiting happily and making your hour+ meal better?
IMO worth 20%."Testosterone levels peak during a man's late 20's but decline soon after, decreasing about 1.5 percent per year after age 30. "
