Sex and The City
Sorry to disappoint boys, but this thread is about the movie, not the act.
Just saw it and have to say it was great. I was never a worshipper of the series or anything, but I was impressed.
It was sad and funny, contemplative and endearing. It was surprisingly well written, and the girls are well, the girls, fabulous in and of themselves.

Did they ACTUALLY get married??? No, no...don't tell me...
I didn't actually follow the show--but caught quite a few re-runs. I wish I was cultish about it back in the day! Would have been a fun girl's night.
I almost went to see it tonight but then decided to be a bum...and go to the gym. Doesn't quite make sense, but mostly I didn't feel like putting on real clothes. LOL So, now I'm going to have to risk sitting through a whole movie. Yay!

I totally agree with the OP. I watched about 3 episodes of the show, but I went to the midnight premeire with friends last night/morning, whatever you want to call it.
I was VERY suprised, and I thought the movie was excellent. It was much longer than expected as well. It is very smartly written, and I have never liked Sarah Jessica Parker, but I almost forgot I was looking at her in the movie.
It also made me realize that I suck. I live in NYC and am not nearly as fabulous as those 4 ladies. hahaha
Also, if you do not want to know what happens, DO NOT go to the Wikipedia page for the movie. They tell EVERYTHING.

does this type of movie give girls of today's society, particularly younger ones, an impression that having multiple partners is ok?

Having multiple parters IS okay.
Everyone who would like to argue otherwise should also be able to prove their virginity.

Have you ever watched the show? You'll find there are 4 very different sexual personalities portrayed. It's not something I feel a kid should really be watching. But considering some are going to catch it, if anything it would teach girls that THEY are okay--or "normal," whether you're more like Samantha or Charlotte. Besides that, these WOMEN are, like...40. LOL

Well, NOW they are. When the show was on the air, they were in their 30s.

This is true...but I still think kids can see the difference between that decade and themselves. I'm far more concerned about the "Girls Gone Wild" age group's ideas. LOL

Between what decade? The late 90s? The show aired from 1998-2003. It ain't exactly ancient history.
If the show is good for anything, I'd say that it's good for examining a lot of common sexual situations and seeing how different people deal with them. I wouldn't point to any of the women as being role models, but I'm sure all of us have run into similiar situations at least once and it's fun to watch it on TV (or at least I thought so).
I think that any guy who points to this show, and tries to argue that it teaches women to act like sluts, really needs to STFU. I have yet to see a guy who wasn't trying to score more pussy than the Humane Society (see also: the Misc). Sure, in some cases, the 4 characters are just trying to get their rocks off, but the whole point of the show is that each of them IS trying to find a relationship that's right for them, and the funny part is seeing all the foibles of the men they end up with and why those men end up being Mr. Wrong.
But some casual sex does happen and while I don't think the show advocates it per se (sure, Samantha does, but Charlotte is just the opposite), it certainly doesn't condemn it. And personally I see that as a good thing.

I think our brains are in two different places. I'm talking about 13 year old girls trying to walk in the shoes of 30-40 year old women...not about the 90's being a long time ago.
And I do think that's what made the show so popular...every woman could relate to all the women on the show in some way.

There's a lot out in society that gives young girls wrong impressions, and sex and the city would be pretty low on my list of concerns. It certainly isn't geared towards young teenagers. Not saying they dont know how to find HBO, but the show is basically showing 4 women in search of love in their 30's and 40's.
As always though, it boils down to being the parents responsibility what their children are exposed to and the morality in which they interpret the things they see.

Hate to break it to you, but young girls aren't looking at the four 'old ladies' of SatC as role models for anything. They're watching those idiots on MTV reality shows, and that is SOO much worse.
Relatedly, does the idea of young men having multiple partners bother you, too?

Well, remember that there IS an episode about that exact thing! Remember, Samantha is the PR rep of the bat mitzvah of a super-rich 13-year-old girl who, along with her friends, essentially acts like she's 30. The moral of that particular story was that Samantha was glad that she spent her early teens being able to be a kid.
Besides, I don't know a 13-year-old alive who doesn't consider "30" as some ancient age they'll never reach, like their mothers. No kid that age would be caught dead trying to act like Mom.

That would the odd 13 year old girl.
*Edit* I was just thinking--aren't there a few Hollywood kids who have grown up like that? It gets blamed on them spending too much time with adults (Drew Barrymore comes to mind).

I can't wait to see the movie. I love the programme, and in the UK Paramount Comedy just ran the entire last series as a build-up, and tonight they're showing the Top 10 episodes, as voted for by viewers. Its made me really excited for the movie!

THE MOVIE WAS FANTASTIC!!!!
I went with my bridesmaids who ranged from me, who can recite every episode front to back, to ones that have seen the show once or twice. Everyone looooovvvveeddddd it!!
**Potential spoiler if you overanalyze**
For everyone who saw the movie...do you agree that the closet reunion wasn't done right (ie. should have been a little more awkward or more dialog or something) and Samantha's ending decision should have been different (ie. all parties followed her heart back to where she started [location])?
I tried really hard to be vague there

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!
I *do* think the closet scene could've used a little "more". . .but at the same time, I've been in a similar situation and it was actually more "real" than one would imagine. I mean, in real life, there isn't that much more to say. There could be more to talk about later, obviously! But in that moment, wow. . .it was pretty real as far as I'm concerned. I also got the impression that Sam *did* go back to NYC.
I loved this movie so much, I saw it twice over the weekend. I'm one of those dorks who never wanted the show to go away. I loved it because it always showed interesting and real subject matter. . .just amplified and more colorful. . .with better clothes. (I won't say better shoes. . .because frankly, my collection could match and possibly defeat Carrie's. Hmph.)
Of course, anyone who has ever been to New York will tell you that the majority of the people living there DO NOT live this way. Nothing is as glamorous or as fabulous as it appears on the show. They rarely show anything outside their little, privliged world, so. . .no one should pack up and think they'll be getting a job, a man and a pre-war apartment in no time flat. LOL!!!
But I did love the movie. I cried so much!!!
I think a lot of people out there saying "I'll never go watch that movie" are people who either never saw more than one or two episodes of the show or are just doing that whole "I'm so cooooool anti-establishment/anti-popular" thing people like to do.
Another reason I loved the show and the movie so much is that I don't know ONE woman who ISN'T part Samantha, part Carrie, part Charlotte or part Miranda. Those women are ALL of us at some point.
Another thing I loved? Is that not only did they age them (rather than keep them perpetually 30) as they would had this much time transpired, but they also let them mature a little.
For those of you who saw it (I'm trying not to spoil anything here. . .), the first time Big called Carrie. . .you know, the night before? Her response was that of a mature, thinking woman. . .not the insecure, neurotic freak she was in the television show. She didn't scream or freak out at that point, ya know? She talked him off the ledge. LOL. I was impressed.
And Samantha's birthday cake at the end? With her AGE on it? I LOVED IT.
Anyway - I'm sure there will be tons of haters out there, but I loved that movie. It was great.
(For the guys, there's another movie out there called "Bra Boys" about the Abberton brothers and the crew at Maroubra Beach. I saw that this weekend, too. LOVED it. Even if you're not a surfer, it's still a good flick.)

I had a girlfriend who said the same thing! I'm letting her borrow my DVD's of the series.
You'll love the series. It's a riot and a half and the movie will mean even that much more to you after you see the series.
One of my favorite things about this show is that it shows what relationships with other women can really be like. Most of us are raised in such a competitive environment, that a lot of us view other women as the enemy instead of sisters with similar problems. It's nice to see four women get along (and fight!) like sisters. I love it.
So glad you enjoyed the movie. It was so much fun!
