SigEpLaxer's Journal
Ok, at the prompting of PT, I'm starting a progress journal. Of course, I'm not sure what to put in there, so I'll start with the basics....

Oh yeah
And I've been using Lean Xtreme and am still working on getting my diet right. I've lost 10 pounds just by dropping a lot of the fast food and other "nonsense" food I'd been eating.

So, I made it to the gym. I really wasn't feeling like it, but I have to keep going. They were having a membership appreciation day so there was a lot of miscellaneous tables setup with stuff going on. I bypassed those and changed and hit the eliptical. Same crowd. Seeing the guys that were in shape gave me the prompting I needed to workout. I worked bis and back today. Sadly, I seem to have picked up 2 pounds. Not sure from what though.
3 sets lat pull downs
3 sets rows
3 sets rear lat extensions
3 sets bicep machine
2 sets of 21s
And got about 10 mins of cardio in. It wasn't my most intense workout, but it'll do.

I was feeling pretty good when I got to the gym. It was on the empty side as it normally is on a Friday. Only the dedicated guys were there.
I started off with 28 minutes on the eliptical, buring off 288 calories on the weight loss setting. After that, I did a brief workout.
3 sets x leg press
3 sets x leg curl
3 sets x calf raises
3 sets x overhead press
3 sets x side lateral raises
I really need to find another routine. This random stuff that I'm doing isn't doing the trick. I think I'm going to talk my partner into doing upper / lower body splits so we work the muscle groups more than once a week.

My workout partner bailed on me. Instead of using it as an excuse not to go to the gym, I still went. The gym was filled with regulars.
I spent 15 minutes on the bike....
Chest Press (machine) 1 x 10 - 90lbs, 1 x 10 - 95lbs, 1 x 10 - 100lbs
Tricep Press (machine) 1 x 10 - 90lbs, 1 x 10 - 95lbs, 1 x 10 - 90lbs
Tricep Extension (machine) 1 x 10 - 70lbs, 1 x 10 - 50lbs, 1 x 10 - 50 lbs
Flys (machine) 1 x 10 - 100lbs, 1 x 10 - 90lbs, 1 x 10 - 85lbs
Not the most intense workout, but I got a good 40 mins of exercise. My weight is around 231 right now. I'm getting a little disillusioned. I'm supposed to be losing weight, not gaining.
It was a good workout though. I felt it for a while after I was done.

I had to take a week off from lifting. Wasn't totally by choice, but I didn't have much option. I got back in there yesterday and had a good lift. I did 28 minute weight loss program on the eliptical and spent another hour lifting.
We did a total of 18 sets of exercises. I decided that we needed to push up the weight we were using in order to make any gains. Bruce is a strong little guy. He kept up with the weight I used. Which isn't saying much because I'm not that strong right now as it is.
I've still not lost any weight. This Lean Xtreme doesn't seem to be helping a whole lot. Maybe I'm not doing it right or something. I'm trying to improve my diet still.

So, my workout partner decided we've been slacking. I was dreading the day he figured that out. LOL. Seriously though, I think we started out a little too conservative on the weights we were using. We've since bumped those numbers up and now I'm feeling it after a workout. Yesterday was back and bis. I did....
Machine Back Extension - 80# x 12, 90# x 12, 105# x 12
Row - 105 x 12, 125 x 12, 140 x 12
Lat Pulldown - 150# x 8, 137.5# x 8, x6
Standing Lat Pulldown - 37.5# x 12, 50# x 5, 37.5# x 10
Arm Curl - 85# x 12, 90# x 11, 90# x 5
21s - 40# x21, x21, x18
Biceps don't feel too sore. Just kinda warm. I had major burn from doing those exercises yesterday. It was unpleasant and pleasant at the same time. My back is sore today. So, overall, I think we're doing much better now. We're on our muscle building phase. I guess after like 3 more weeks we'll try cutting. I wonder if we need to cut back on cardio right now?

I'm working out tonight instead of last night. The chinese food I ate didn't agree with me at all, so I didn't want to risk embarrassing myself at the gym.
I gotta admit, I'm seeing some difference in my arms. I still have the gut, but I've read enough to know that I can't spot reduce, so I've got to spend more time on the cardio. So many...programs...to do cardio. Do I try HIIT or some extended pace? I'd really like to drop some weight, but right now, it just appears that I'm switching fat for muscle.
Maybe I need to bulk up first then slim down. I"ve read more muscle is more calories burned per day.
2 more hours til lifting.

Got to the gym at 5:22p and hopped on the eliptical. Not feeling it, I got on the treadmill for 10 mins on the weight loss setting. That wasn't bad and I burned 100 calories. I think I need to do that more often.
We did
Incline bench
Flat Bench
Flys
Tricep Extension
Tricep Pushdowns
I couldn't get ahold of a pen, so I wasn't able to write our weights down. I do know that my max bench is 155 at the moment. Not the greatest, but not as bad as I thought. It's a full 20# heavier than I thought. Now, I was only able to move it 4 times though.
My left shoulder really is bothering me. It's fine through the first part of the workout, but as it gets to the 30 minute mark, I start losing strength in it. Doing flat bench with the one arm failing makes it a little difficult to complete a set. I'm going to try and see if my insurance covers physical therapy.
Today is back and bis.

I gave my back a good workout. The bis I kinda slacked on. Considering I really didn't feel like going to the gym, I think I did pretty well. I didn't record what I did though, so I can't post what weights I did and such. Still it was a good workout and I can feel it still.
Of course, my diet is still for ****, but I'm working on it.

Leg and shoulder workout day. I managed to leg press 290 x 7. If I can pull off 300, I'll be content for a while. My left shoulder continues to give me all kinds of problems. I am scared of lifting too heavy of weight due to how it fails on my infrequently. I've got to find out if I can rehab the shoulder to get my strength back in it. It's affecting how much I'm able to bench.
Legs are my strongest bodypart. I'm betting they are for everyone. It's hard to work them out to get them more muscular.
And, I just can't shrink this damn gut. I've improved what I'm eating. My waist has dropped 2 sizes, but I can't shrink the gut. I need more cardio I guess. Maybe I should start going to the gym 5 times a week. 3 lifting days and 2 cardio.

Grrrr
Worked out chest and tris yesterday. Hopped on the scale and I'm still 228, but my waist size is down to ~34. I really wanna get rid of some of this weight, but that just doesn't seem to be in the cards for me right now. I did contact Nick about getting a workout regimen and diet path down.
So, we did....
Chest Press 100 x 12, 105 x 10, 110 x 9 (machine)
Inclined Bench 95 x 12, 105 x12, 115 x 11
Flies 145 x 12, 160 x 10, 160 x 7 (machine)
Tricep Pushdown 30 x 12, 30 x 11, 40 x 4
Behind head tricep press 25 x 12, 25 x12, 25 x 12 (dumbbell)
I feel that we might not be hitting each bodypart enough per week. Right now we do a two muscle group session each time. Right now we do
Mon - Chest / Tris
Wed - Back / Bis
Fri - Legs / Shoulders
I've seen others with this kind of split, but I don't know how well it will do me for gaining muscle and losing fat. Time to ask more questions.

Wednesday, 7-9-08 Workout
I was pumped about going to the gym yesterday. Only downside was that we had to rush a bit thru the workout. A lot of the usual suspects were in the gym, so we couldn't get on the machines on the first floor. So, we made our way up to the second floor and did our workout there. It seemed a little harder this week working back and bis. We dropped the 21s in favor of single arm curls.
Rear Delt Extension 105 x 10, 110 x 8, 110 x 5
Row 140 x 10, 150 x 10, 155 x 6
Lat Pulldown 137.5 x 10, 137.5 x 10, 150 x 7
Standing Lat Pressdown (what is that exercise called anyway?) 37.5 x 12, 50 x 7, 50 x 5
Machine Preacher Curl 90 x 8, 90 x 7, 90 x 6
Dumbbell Arm Curls 30 x 5, x 5, x 4
Seeing the other guys in there does wonders for keeping me motivated. I'm glad I've gotten over being self conscious in the gym. Even those studs had to start off as duds.
Heh...I'm not really a dud anymore either.

Friday, 7-11-08 Workout
Got to the gym at 5:15. The place had to have about a 1/4 of the people that are normally in there. The diehard dedicated guys and gals were in there. The guy that walks around looking like a walking A&F ad was there.
Anyway, today was leg and shoulder day. My left shoulder seems to be getting its strength back. I don't know if I should stay at the higher weights I'm using or if I should lift lighter and "nurse it" until it gets up to speed. I'm not a strong as a lot of guys in the gym, but I'm still damn proud of what I can lift. Exercises included....
Overhead Press 95 x 10, 100 x 10, 105 x 6
Machine Lat Raises 80 x 10, 85 x 10, 90 x 8
Front Lat Raises (dumbbell) 20 x 10, 20 x 10, 20 x 6 (these started my shoulder to hurting, so that ended the shoulder workout)
Leg Press 295 x 10, 300 x 10, 305 x 10 (REALLY proud of this)
Leg Extension 90 x 10, 90 x 10, 90 x 10
I'm getting used to the burn from the leg extensions. Starting to be a good feeling, if not short. Monday is chest day. I really hope I start getting some good development in my chest. I've got to ramp up my cardio. I've lost 2 waist sizes, but the gut still remains.

7/14/08 Workout
I didn't feel like working out with my partner yesterday, so I told him that I was going to go later. Sometimes it's kinda a zen thing to workout on your own. At least for me. I grabbed my RCA MP3 player and went to work.
I went to my "home" gym in Locust Point. Saw some familiar faces and plenty of new ones. I try to focus on what I'm doing, but that 6'10" was a distraction. I only did 6 minutes on the treadmill, but I spent a solid 3.5 minute doing a full run. I'm pleased with this because I wasn't tired at the end. Another minor accomplishment, but an accomplishment nonetheless. I kinda skimped on the biceps because I could barely lift anything.
So, I did...
Rear Delt Fly (machine) 100 x 10, 115 x 10, 115 x 10
Lat Pulldown (machine) 110 x 10, 130 x 10, 150 x 10 (I was able to hang with a big guy on this as I worked in with him. Another minor accomplishment)
Row (machine) 130 x 10, x 8, x 10
Arm Curl (machine) 85 x 8, 85 x 5, 70 x 5 (I don't know what happened there. I normally workout at 90# but could barely move it last night)
Anyway, overall I think I did pretty well. PT mentioned about doing splits, so I'm going to chat with the workout partner about that. After what I've read about them, I think that's a great idea. We'll hit bodyparts more often.
I'm really pleased with that progress I'm seeing in my arms. Still not seeing a whole lot of chest progression. Lats are starting to show. I'm almost confident enough to post my own pics up here. I've seen some guys that are in the same boat as me post and people didn't make fun of them, so I think I can do the same. People were pretty helpful actually.

7-16-08 Workout
Hooked back up with my workout partner for chest and tri day. I'm still sore from my back/bi workout on Monday. Good possibility I over did it some.
The gym had the usual suspects there again. One guy, who's build I greatly admire, nearly ran me over coming out of the lockerroom. Bastard didn't even excuse himself. Anyway, I make my way upstair and head for the treadmills. I'm finding I burn more calories on the treadmill than on the eliptical. Was being kinda lazy and was only doing fast walking instead of running. I let my mind wander as I was on the treadmill, when suddenly...bam! treadmill stops. I'm nearly thrown to the floor. The power in the gym went out. I made a joke with the guy next to me saying that it was a sign that we're doing too much cardio. I went and found my workout partner and we got started. I think it's the overload workout that we've stumbled on because every week, we increase the load we're using by about 5 - 10 pounds. I don't know if I can build that kind of strength to lift 10 pounds more in a week, but.....
Bench Press 135 x 10, 155 x 10, 165 x 8 (I must be getting stronger because I could only do like 1 three weeks ago)
Flys (machine) 130 x 10, 130 x 9, 130 x 7 (My shoulder really started to bother me at this point. It wasn't that I couldn't move the weight anymore, just my shoulder gave out)
Incline Bench 95 x 10, 95 x 8, 95 x 6 (At this point, that was it for my shoulder. I need to see someone about it to get my strength back in it)
Arm Extension 70 x 10, 70 x 10, 70 x 7
Tricep Pushdown 30 x 10, 30 x 10, 30 x 10

7-22-08 Workout
So, I ended up going to the gym yesterday instead of Monday. I had to work late on Monday and just didn't feel it for going to the gym afterwards.
I got to the gym and saw the usual suspects again. There were a couple of "new" guys there. It's kinda hard not to be impressed by what you see in the gym. Especially when you're in my position of trying to regain some esteem while building up my body. I do notice that, much like the pretty people, muscle guys tend to gravitate towards one another.
I had considered trying to ask one of the guys about what he does to fill out his chest like that, but thought better of it. Not everyone is as friendly to new lifters as Harry was.
Anyway, my workout partner and I threw ourselves into our workout. I'm a little concerned that he's not working as hard as he could be. He's not really breaking a sweat, while I'm sweating my ass off. I could just be a pig though. Anyway, I did...
Bench Press 165 x 10, 170 x 8, 165 x 5 (so my max is up by 5 pounds after a week. I wonder if I'll be up another five by next week)
Flys (machine) 130 x 10, 130 x 7, 130 x 7 (I've had trouble maintaining good form doing these. My shoulder continues to interfere)
Inclined Bench 95 x 10, 105 x 8, 105 x 6 (I wonder if my incline is supposed to be so much less than my flat bench)
Arm Extension (machine) 70 x 10. 75 x 10, 80 x 6
Tricep Push Down 40 x 12, 50 x 10, 50 x 10
After doing some reading, it occurs to me that my weight really isn't going to drop if I'm lifting heavy. I'm probably exchanging fat for muscle. I think I'll do two more weeks of heavy lifting than try experimenting with cutting. Maybe I'll ask PT about it.

7-23-2008 Workout
I got out of work early and made my way to the gym. Along the way I listened to some pretty heavy music to get psyched up so I could really throw some weight around. I got there at about 5:15 and my workout partner was already on the eliptical. I wanted to run on the treadmill, but all of them were full. So, I hoped on an eliptical and started my warm up. I did it for 12 mins and burned about 100 calories. My friend tells me that that is nothing and I need to burn more. He suggested a spin class AGAIN. I think I'll die if I take one of those right now.
The gym was a bit less crowded than normal in the weights area. It's easy to see the dedication that some of these guys have. One thing I noticed though. The female population of the gym is relatively small in comparison to the size of the membership.
I had the talk with my workout partner about what we're doing. He still wants to lift heavy and lose weight. I don't think you can do both at the same time. After a point, I think he and I may not workout together because our approach to our goals don't seem to be matching up. He simply won't accept anything I come to him with that I learn here. I need to get him to sign up.
Anyway, the workout.....
Reverse Fly (machine) 115 x 9, 115 x 7, 115 x 6
Lat Pulldown 130 x 10, 142.5 x 11, 150 x 8
Rows (machine) 130 x 10, 135 x 10, 140 x 10
Back Extension (machine) 130 x 10, 135 x 10 (lower back started to bother me, so I didn't finish the last set)
Arm Curl (machine) 70 x 10, 80 x 10, 85 x 10 (I try to lift equally with both arms, but I'm still seeing a little more progress in one bicep over the other)
Bicep Curl (dumbbell) 25 x 10, 30 x 5, 25 x 7 (my left arm really is lagging behind my right. I keep talking about going to therapy for it, but continue to drag my fee about it.)
Overall, it was a good workout. I built up a great sweat.
I had the bottle of "Basic Cuts" and was leery to use it because of the caffeine content. So, I started off with one pill instead of two. Will see if it's any good. It says it's good to stack with Lean Xtreme which I'm taking as well. I wish I could use Hydroxycut, but it causes me chest pains every time I use it.

If your partner isn't with u then drop him. You can find some great help in the gym. As for the workout, keep it going. Seeing some progress. As for lower back was probably soreness. We all get it! As for lagging parts everyone has parts that lag. That takes time for things to even themselves out. Keep it upm proud of you bro! Your work ethic is woah, lol!

7-25-2008 Workout
So, another Friday in the gym. There weren't a lot people there. Kind of expected. Everyone is off to beach and such. Mon thru Fri they workout so they can look good on the weekends. Wish that were the case for me. I'm just working out to try and lose weight and change my view of myself. I doubt I'll get back to playing a sport like Lacrosse. I'm just a bit too old to take those kinda hits anymore. That's funny considering I was asking about Rugby.
Anyway, we'd been ignoring our calves, so we threw them in with the rest of the workout. It consisted of....
Overhead Press (machine) 105 x 10, x 10, x 7 ( I think my left shoulder is starting to pull its own weight a little better now)
Lateral Raises (machine) 90 x 10, x 10, x 10 (Time to up the weight)
Front Raises (dumbbell) 20 x 10, x 10, x 10 (Ugh..hate this exercise, but time to up the weight there too)
Leg Press (machine) 305 x 10, 310 x 5, 150 x 10 ( I don't know what happened but on the second set I get a really bad sharp pain in my right knee. I dropped the weight for the final set so I could finish it)
Leg Extension (machine) 90 x 10, 95 x 10, 100 x 10 (hate these too)
Calf Raises 80 x 10, 100 x 10, 120 x 10
My workout partner has this week off, so I don't know if he'll be working out with me or not. The true test of my conviction to losing the weight will come if he's not going to the gym with me. I'll have to go by myself and push myself. I think I became to accustomed to having a workout partner when I was in college playing Lacrosse.

See you are making progress, cool! As you said the test of your commitment wil be this week, as you partner is out so to speak. Just push yourself and feed off the energy of others in the gym around you that's how I get through, usually!

Well, my commitment was tested yesterday and I came thru with flying colors. My workout partner isn't working out with me this whole week. So, it's up to me to go on my own. Yesterday's workout was intense. I sweated so hard that even after I left I was still sweating heavily. I skipped on one chest exercise, but I knew I'd be doing pushups later that night for the 100 pushup challenge test. So, I did....
15 mins on the stair climber, burning 186 calories. OH MY GOD was I tired when I was done. But, I went on and lifted.
Chest Press 140 x 10, x 10, x 3 ( don't know what happened on that last set. I just couldn't move the weight anymore )
Machine Fly 90 x 10, x 10, x 10 ( I really could have done more, but my shoulder was bothering me some. )
Arm Extension 80 x 10, x9, x 6 ( again, not sure what happened. I was straining hard to get that last 6)
Pushdowns 40 x 10, x 10, x 10 ( good stuff. I definitely felt it )
I didn't give myself a lot of breaks in between sets, so that may have been why I couldn't complete the final sets.
I'm stuck with a dilemma. There are two people I've talked to on here about getting "professional" customized routines. One is kinda expensive, but he's got a lot of experience and knowledge behind him. The other is cheaper and has similiar knowledge but aimed at different goals. Maybe I should deal with the lower priced option first. If that doesn't work out, I can always go to the other guy. It's not that I don't have the money. I just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of it.

Good progress; take breaks as needed! As for workint out, dnt stress on the weights, take it as you feel comfortable. You get what I mean? Dnt do no more than what you feel comfortable with.

7-30-2008 Workout
I got to the gym pretty psyched about working out. I had been dragging most of the day, but as time approached to lift, I felt better. I went to the Canton gym because it's bigger and I don't usually have to wait for equipment. I've been sweating harder on my own than I have been with my workout partner. I spend less time in between sets than I do with him there. We need to talk, I think.
So, the workout....
10 minutes on othe stair master which burned ~126 calories.
Reverse Fly 115 x 10, x 10, x 8 (not a bad exercise. I so wanted to lower the weight)
Lat Pulldown 87.5 x 10, x 10, x 10 (I lowered the weight on this. Based on what I read, I should be doing 85% of max for mass)
Row 140 x 10, x 10, x 10 (I was pouring sweat by this time.)
Hammer Curls 20 x 8, x 8, x 8 (I reduced the number of reps on this in an attempt to use a higher weight. That didn't go so well)
Concentratoin Curls 20 x 7, x 7, x 7 (My new favorite bicep exercise)
I'm having so much trouble with my left arm. I can't do as many reps with it as I can my right. And I really have to struggle with what I can do. The biceps look about the same size when flexed though. Gonna get a bicep pic for my profile this weekend. Anyway, I don't know if I need to just lift lighter weight with my left until I get it stronger or keep struggling with the same I use for my right. I'll have to ask.
Rich told me I need to up my caloric intake. After checking, I barely get 1500 calories per day in. No wonder I can't lose any weight. Though I don't understand how eating more will help me lose weight. Off to the forums!

Back to work
I did a half hearted workout on Friday and Monday I made a lame ass excuse as to why I couldn't lift. My workout partner wasn't convinced, but he left it alone.
I arrived at the gym yesterday kinda psyched for the workout. I was very alert and energized. The gym wasn't as populated as it normally is. The usual suspects weren't there this time. Well, those two guys were, but the vast majority of the people I recognized weren't there. So, I went upstairs and climbed up on the Star Master and put myself thru 10 minutes of step climbing. I don't feel as bad now as I did before when I would do this. I really need to bump it back up to 15 mins. Well, I really need to go in there for a hour and burn off like 700 calories. Bet sweating that much feels good.
The workout...
Bench - 145 x 10, 165 x 9, 185 x 8 (My max bench is probably more than 205, but I'll wait til Andy is there to spot me for more)
Incline Bench - 95 x 10, 115 x 8, 115 x 7
Flys (machine) 90 x 10, 95 x10, 100 x 10 (I went a bit light on this exercise because my shoulder was bothering me again.)
Tricip Push Downs 40 x 10, 60 x 10, 70 x 10 (Standing against that pad improved my form for these)
Seated Dips 8, 8, 2 (OMFG these were hard. I heard body weight exercises really do a number on you, but damn.)
How do you lift to lose weight? Going heavy builds muscle, going light does toning. How do you lose weight?
My diet remain teh ****. I really have got to work on what I'm eating. Currently, I can't afford either Nick (who hasn't emailed me back after asking him a question) or Layne (who knows a lot more and thusly is more expensive). I am not good at this diet stuff, so I'm going to have to get someone to develop one for me. I know people substitute shakes for a couple meals in a day. I'll see who I can find local to talk to.
