I'm a new personal trainer
I have been working out and studying fitness in school and on my own for the past six years. I recently got a job at a personal training studio and a public gym. Do any experienced personal trainers have advice?
I will be training my 23 yr old, female friend who is a little out of shape but used to workout alot. I'll also be training my 55yr old mom, who is very healthy diet wise and with flexibility, but has no muscular strength and reches MHR very quickly with intense cardio.
Please let me know if anyone has some good advice!!
Steph

You're pretty!
Um, back in the subject. I'm sure you'll do fine, don't force anyone into heavy weights and be strict on form and diet.
Edit: I'm not a certified trainer, I just thought you were looking for general advice, Sorry!

-Remember the stair-case principle.
-Make sure your clients have eaten something before he/she starts working out.
-Make sure your clients drink plenty of water.
-Don't be afraid of making your clients squat, bench press, deadlift, row, etc...
-Don't be afraid of making your clients lift heavy (not starting out of course), sets of 6, 5, 4, and 3 reps are good!
-Remember anyone can make a client tired, but it takes a real trainer to make someone stronger, faster, more muscular, etc....
-Practice what you preach.
-Have business cards with you at all times.
-Make sure you take into account clients' injuries, recent surgeries, smoking, drinking, etc....

to be successful in a public gym setting, a great personality is almost as important as training knowledge itself. Maintain a positive attitude and remain energetic on the job will help you start with a big step

its good that you have your friend and mother as clients but i am always weary of mixing friend/family with business. Sometimes if they are not committed and they mess you around a little, it can put you into a tight bind as to wether to go along with it as you know them on a personal level or to cut them loose as this is your professional job.

If it's only a personal training studio - good choice
As for the public gym - it's all about SALES. That's what's most important to a public gym, than anything else $$$

ya, I am doing the gym thing for experience. I have alot of experience in marketing and sales, so I should do well with getting clients there. I am aiming to go fulltime at the studio though. The owner of the studio just wants me to get more hands on experience at a public gym...

So the owner of the PT studio is fine with you working at a public gym? The owner probably wont mention it to you, but the owner does want you to bring in clients from the public gym to the PT studio. That would be one of the biggest reasons, the owner would be ok with you working at a public gym.
Good choice on pursuing FT at the Studio.

You probably wouldn't want to bring your gym clients to your studio. That would really piss off the gym manager/owner if he/she found out.

You dont bring them right away. When their training package at the big gym is up you have them sign up with you at the studio. Chances are it will be cheaper for your client and you will make more because the big gym wont be taking everything you earn. This is all based on the client wanting to continue to train with you but if they are seeing results and building a good relationship with the trainer Im sure 90% will esp when they find out it will be cheaper.

The number one mistake I observe female trainers make is that they lack intensity. Female trainers fall into the trap of $60 per hour friend and not trainer. You talk before the workout and after. But during the session it's all about THE WORKOUT.
Good luck and congrats!

ya, I'm not going to try to steal people from the gym or anything. I already have a good realtionship with the gym, because I was origianally hired to be their promo model a few months ago.
The owner of the studio let me come and observe there for a week. He has been training for 17 yr and all trainers there have been there 7+. He told me he promised himself he'd never hire a "green trainer" again, but I have the skills, confidence, and knowledge to be a good trainer. I just need more experience, so that's why I'm working at both places.

I had my first Initial Orientation today, and it was a guy who used to be in bodybuilding shows. I had him do a mini workout and cardio just to intro what I can show him and he liked it, so he's comin back tomorrow to sign up. I need to show him an awesome workout tomorrow tho, so he'll def signup w me!!
He wants to lose fat and get more defined...lol of course. I'm gonna help him w diet too. Any ideas on a good workout to show him? I really need to impress him!

Psychology will play a big role in what you do...you just have to be judicious with it...
