Why use wrist straps for pullups?

What do they do actually? Should you avoid using straps whenever possible?

it helps you not to lose your grip.

If your grip is weak the straps help.

I thought that they were for walking around and looking all bad a$$ in the gym?

Also if you have trouble with focusing on the particular muscle group, they can help here since less efort and focus is placed on the forearm and other grip muscles.

Well for weighted pullups it can get heavy.... if you dont have chalks its even worse.
Best total: 1715 (600-415-700) raw with wraps.

Truth. People who bitch that you are denying yourself have no idea what is going on.

If your worried about grip, set a specific day for it. No reason that your back workout should suffer because you have the forearms of a 12 yr old.

I think using straps for deadlift is weak. Everything is relative, if using straps for deads or pullups gets you the workout you want then use them and **** what everybody else says.

Over time I've noticed that those who use a lot of machines have weak grips. They are not accustomed to grabbing something with a death grip. During presses and pulls you should be gripping hard enough to build popeye forearms (forget about thumbless grips--thats for the advanced). Even on push ups, your fingers should be attempting to tear into the ground.

Train your grip now as your working out and you may not need straps later.

Bodybuilders have no need to avoid using straps.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

I use straps all the time, and no one thinks I'm weird. I use them on pullups, deadlifts, and some other things too.

Straps are fine, and it's not like you get no grip work either, it just helps get the last few reps in where your grip would otherwise fail.

Exactly, now if you use them to lift 10 lbs then you might get some looks.

X2 - I have yet to be laughed at, or maybe I just haven't noticed cause I dont care...lol, and I use straps all the time, for most pulling stations, including pullups...when you weigh a certain amount, its kinda like weighted pullups, so whatever. I guess if your focus is on, your intensity is through the roof, and your ear-buds are blaring, everything else disappears, including little laughing people...or maybe Im just a pussy...

Another thing that came to mind was if you wanted to work on your grip whist doing the exercise sans straps, try to find a smaller diameter bar. They are easier to get a good locking grip on.

I use straps when i'm going heavy on DL's, rows, and pullups whenever I feel like I want to really focus on my back strength and not my grip strength. Weighted pullups I try not to use straps until I go above 80 lbs added on.
