1. Reps for help with a hard trigonometry word problem.

43. A visitor to the Leaning Tower of Pisa observed that the tower's shadow was 40 meters long and that the angle of elevation from the tip of the shadow to the top of the tower was 57 degrees. The tower is now 54 meters tall, measured from the ground to the top along the center line of the tower (see the figure). Approximate the angle a that the center line of the tower makes with the vertical.

(Yes I drew it in paint)

The back of the book says the answer is 5.4 degrees.

How did they get this?

2. bump

3. I'll try it now. (probably won't get it)

4. I got 5.2185 degrees.

5. Can anyone explain how to do it?

I'll try to draw it in paint but i've never used it before so it will take awhile.

wow you have a computer and have never used paint?

8. I don't know about no trigomomotry but that is the leaning tower of Pisa... FACT.

10. Here, if you don't understand it tell me.

11. Bump, do you get it now?

12. I just repped you, and I'm in the process of working it out, thanks for the trouble, I will let you know in a minute if I get it,

13. Still dont get it, I'm sorry, but could you explain each step you took to find each value? I've been working on this problem for atleast an hour!

14. bump

15. I'll do it step by step real quick.

wait before you do, a guy on another forum says your wrong, and that this is the right way to do it:

17. 1. I seperated the big triangle into 2 triangles (Triangle Y and triangle Z)
Triangle Y is congruent to Triangle X by Hypothenuse-Leg Congruency. You got this part?

18. here goes my long hard way.

sin57 / 54m = sin y / 40m

then you get angle y, you do 180 - 57 - angle y = the angle near A (z)

since the other line is a straight, i assume perpendicular to the floor, so it is 90 degrees. so 90 - angle z = angle a

edit; works with post # 16

19. Wait, just looked at it again. That way works too, but it's harder. (both are easy though)

Reading the question again I think you drew the picture wrong so my way doesn't work. In your picture it looks like the hypothenuse of the big triangle goes up to the top of the hypotenuse of the smaller triangle instead of the leg. Dang I failed, lol. Next time I'll make sure to re-read the question.

X2, I completely misread the question.

good effort all the same

23. wait could someone please explain step by step how to do it? I will rep infinately if someone can. It's 11 at night and I have been working at these for hours!

24. bump!

I dont understand why 38 and 33 aren't reversed, isn't it

40/sinx = 54/sin57 for the law of sins?

26. Do you know what the Law of Sines is? that's all he did. I drew a pic.

27. wow this is simple maths. Do it yourself dumbass!

but why isn't the 38 and the 33 switched, I used

40/sinx = 54/sin 57......

why is the 38.4, 38.4? shouldn't it be where the 33 is?

29. Pic VVVVV

The 54 is the middle line not the left leg. See the pic I drew.
