    BePrecise's One-Arm Training & Rehab

Although I thought about posting this in the injury section, a guy at work said I sustained my injury because I was old. Since no old folks hang out here, I figured this was the place to be to keep me motivated as right now this sucks.

I've been trying to get into shape for this summer's baseball season. I found an Over 35 hardball league, dropped almost 30 pounds, set up my training cycles around it, ...I was ready. Murphy came a-knockin' on Sunday as on a crisp day, we had a scrimmage. A guy who I dubbed "Frank Thomas" pitching threw a high-rising fastball that I swing at and fouled off right above my hands. I got that immediate baseball sting and it didn't go away. By the time I got home I knew I fractured my hand. Sure enough, I got my splint yesterday and get my full cast next week. Immobilization for 4-6 weeks, then a little rehab, basically season over. I could return, but I'd much rather know I'm 100% from the start than trying to work my way back. Either way, I never got to even begin the season or get my jersey.

So for the first time in my exercise history of over 10 years, I have an injury that really effects all aspects of my training (and typing as this is taking forever). I am going to chronicle my journey to keep me motivated as this is going to affect my bike riding to work, training intensity, and I can just feel the set-up for me to climb back well over 200lbs., when I'd still like to get to around 185 which is where I was headed.

Of course folks like my dad are thinking, "You are too old to be out there playing ball." But like I told him, I would rather suffer the injuries playing like a child, than the diseases living like an adult e.g. heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Welcome! It's a fine bunch of young people here. If you're too old to play ball, then I'm over-the-hill to be doing triathlons.

Injuries suck and the can easily be demotivating. Try to keep positive and don't let it get you down.

Of course this probably sounds like a bunch of tree-huggin' hippy stuff, but I really do mean it!

    Again, welcome!

    Thanks Donna!
Yes you're right, this does suck. So far the worst part has been trying to not feel out of shape. I know it's all in my head as I cannot be de-conditioned that fast!

    Still Hitting the Gym

So far this week I've hit the gym twice. My routines are still full-body which I started about 3 weeks ago. So far what I've noticed is that it's much harder to get any kind of pump training just one side. It's somewhat weird. Even sets I've taken to failure still don't feel pumped. Now I know that's not everything, but it is a weird feeling.
I'm still trying to figure out what I can and can't do, but did find some small cuffs that I'm assuming most use to put on their ankles for hip abduction/adduction. I strapped it around my left forearm and was able to do low-pulley side raises. Actually due to the shorter arm-lever, I was able to use more weight than normal so at least my delts should stay in good shape.

    Now to monitor "shrinkage":
    Right arm relaxed: 16
    Right arm flexed: 17.5
    Left (injured) arm relaxed: 15.75
    Left arm flexed: 16.75

One issue already was the fact that I really couldn't get a "fair" flex on my left arm as I can't make a fist. It'll be interesting to see the size difference by the end of June and how much cross-transfer effect I receive.
