O/T I'm teaching teens and would like input!
I have recently been recruited to teach 14-24 year-olds - Defensive Driving Course / Alive at 25. This course teaches kids to become not only better and safer drivers, but is more so about decision making in real life - drugs, alcohol, sex, peer pressure, etc.
It's a four hour course and I'm working with communities to find the money to pay for it, so the kids can all "afford" to go.
I would really like your input an suggestions as to how I can keep the class interesting and fun. I have only taught one so far and did get the "she was fun" critique from one of the kids, but I would like your help, if you would!
Games, give aways, what else? How would you do it? Has to be quick and easy!
Thanks!!!!

I get enough of the MILF stuff from my kids' friends and they are usually totally mortified! So... although I always wear a thong... I think it'll be best to keep it covered up!
Any other suggestions?

Show the film Red Asphalt and serve pizza. That's what my driving instructor did. (seriously)
Other ideas...try to add in some group/"team" activities. I think adding some socialization to the class can make it more entertaining for them.

Serious suggestions/thoughts? This is a very important program to me... My state has about 600,000 people and we lost 42 in this age group last year alone due to car crashes!

Yeah wear something hott. I dont know. It doesnt sound like a very "fun" class but I have to say I hope they take it to heart. My best friend in High School was killed when she got in a car with a driver who had been drinking. No one thinks it can happen to them but it happens a lot more than we all think. Good luck!

The class I recently taught was to 8th graders... maybe should've mentioned - although it's open thru age 24 - I'm concentrating on the high school kids... I've had to attend the funeral of my son's best friend two weeks after their graduation and watched the mom's hand as they lowered the coffin... and so it's a soft spot for me!

I have a son now and I can not even imagine how horrible it must be to lose a child. Its amazing the stupid things we do when we are teenagers (or even adults for that matter). I just wish there was a way of taking our experiences and getting them through to them. I remember hearing all the horror stories and it just went in one ear and out the other. Its amazing im still alive after some of the crap I pulled. Kudos for teaching this class!

Ok...I teach 110 freshmen, so I understand where you're coming from
First off, know that it's not possible to keep 100% of them engaged 100% of the time...99%, maybe
The key is to make the room as relaxed as possible and have a lot of hands on activities. For instance, today I did an overview of the cold war....instead of giving them straight notes to take, I printed them out, cut them up, and hid them around the room....they knew there were 25 they had to find, and then do whatever it said (answer questions, take notes, etc.). It got them up and moving, but still gave them the same information they needed to get.
In this day in age, kids are so wired to technology that it's a constant song and dance routine to teach or else they zone out...and that's when you have problems.

Fortunately... I can limit the class to only 20, which increases my chance at keeping their attention! Great ideas - thanx!

If your getting positive feed back , keep doing it that way. I would be enthusiastic about what I doing and show a positive outlook, which i believe you are doing now. I would track down that movie mentioned. Ask folks if they exercise. Ask them to tell you the pro's and con's of exercise VS. the pro's and con's of bad choices. I would throw in the question , How may believe you can get high from exercise and challenge them.

Try using some of the video clips from this site. Each of the pages has different clips. PM me if you have questions or if you'd like more clips.
