Daily Rave
I just had to brag really quick.
I've been running forEVER and I'm training for a marathon in August, but just in the past couple of months I've added weightlifting with my husband on my crosstraining days.
Runners I talked to advised me not to do it because any added bulk would slow my time and the extra protein I have to eat would cut into all the carbs I'm supposed to have.
WELL. Yesterday I ran 14 miles faster than I ever have, and there was virtually no soreness afterward. I know the reason for this is because my legs are stronger than they've ever been, and I really believe the added protein is helping my muscles recover more quickly, which is why there's no soreness.
I don't know why runners are so opposed to lifting, but I don't care. This is totally working for me and I am going to keep doing it.
[/bragging]

Your husband doesn't mind when you lift him?

Yeah Jill!
I don't know when everyone is going to catch on and realize that bodybuilding is good for you. I wonder if there is science behind what the expert runners told you or if it's all just a bunch of bunk.
Congratulations though! I hate running so I don't do it anymore but more power to you if you love it.

Being an X runner myself, lifting is ok... but you should expect to run forever and intend to gain big mass, if this is the case. Strenght training is good and will help have strong muscles and good strenght in you running longer distances IMHO.
Protein IS important but carb loading too specially for a marathon. I think the average marathon runner carbo loads 2-3 days before the marathon. I know i ate like ALOT before I did mine a few years back... JMO though but my thoughts on the matter. Too much running if you want to gain mass will hinder the latter.

football + basketball + track all 4 years of highschool.
Worked out hard in the gym all year around for football, and junior year ran a 4:34 mile for track. Don't see why you can't lift?

I think I'll pull back on the running a bit after my marathon is over. Maybe just 5x per week for a half hour or so. I really do love running, but I also love the way my body looks with the added mass. I'm sure there's got to be a balance I can find.
Oh yeah. I looooove carb loading.

I think it's just the conventional "wisdom" of long distance running. Crosstraining is seen as more of just something to do on your off days than an actual benefit. There's an Ultra Marathon (100-miles nonstop) runner right now who's 40 years old who only runs six miles a day, but she also swims and cycles, and she's blowing away 20 year olds (male and female) who run 20 miles a day.
Everyone else-- Thanks for the kudos!!

That's awesome! Running does take a lot out of your body, though. I'm glad I got over covering distances...but it was a hard break to make. It's addictive!
I thought some form of weight training was actually supposed to be good for runners (all sports, really)...I thought the only time people were super concerned about extra weight/nutrition needed for muscle was when they were tapering for a race? Maybe look into that...
I have a couple of psycho friends who do ironmans and ultra marathons...one was even talking about stuff beyond ultra marathons, where people go running through South America for a few months and stuff (and hopefully avoid getting kidnapped...LOL). Extreme endurance athletes are crazy!

Yeah, those Ultra runners are certifiable. 100 miles on a trail nonstop?? Hellz to the no!! There was adocumentary (forget the name and too lazy to Google it) about three guys who ran the freaking Sahara desert. I am definitely battling a distance addiction but I don't think I'll ever be in danger of wanting to run that damn far!

Oh Jill, I see by your pic they fixed your eye! That's so great. I know holding the spoon over it must have been tiring.

Yeah. There were some unwelcome comments about the other picture so I figured I'd be safer if I totally advertised my SO.
Now I can give my spoon wrist a rest lol.

I don't know...runners seem to get themselves all worked up into thinking things like that are a good idea/goal when you get them in groups together. You should join a running club and see if they can warp your mind that much! LOL

Only you can decide what's best for your own body. Go with what makes you happy - seems like you're definitely on the right track

I have a buddy who just ran in a half marathon and he has a stress fracture in his shin now. The doctor said if he had been strength training all along and had a little more muscle his shin would have been fine. Now he has to wear a boot for 2 months.

Great job with the running, Jill. As someone who's always trying to overcome their cardio allergy I'm always impressed by a person who can do that sort of thing!
