Front barbell press mainly targets the anterior deltoids. the front shoulders. doing behind the neck targets more of the medial head, the middle and also a little of the upper traps.

i'd say in general in front allows a more natural movement for the shoulder joint. this is how you would lift any real object in real life.

edit: i don't see a significant difference in what muscle are worked how much. especially i can#t see how BTN would engage more side delt, it rather puts the side delts in a position where they can't exert much force. traps are engaged in every overhead lift.

BTN will help add to back thickness, or it has in my experiences, but is also less than desirable for the joint considering the body would never make this lift due to the fact that lifting in front is more natural and efficient. For your joints, I would probably just stay away from it and find other alternatives.
