I cut the threads out of some old spinlock plates I had so they could slide on a standard bar. I was using a one-inch bit in a drill press to do the job but after cutting a few threads out the bit was shot. I finally ground and filed the rest of the threads out but it was time consuming. (I guess that if someone had a full machine shop it could be done easier.) I had some very good metal cutting hole saw blades but I did not want to take a chance on ruining them on some old junk iron plates. After my experience I would suggest that the best thing to do is sell the old standard one inch plates for whatever you can get for them and buy some used Olympic weights on the cheap.

If you do decide to go through with the folly of wasting time and effort to make standard plates into Olympic plates then forget the camera because you will be too busy kicking your own butt to take pictures once you get started.
