    Independent Trainers?

Hey, I'm a recently graduated trainer and the gym prospects are pretty slim in my area. Any independent trainers out there running into problems with health clubs not allowing you to train? In home training is killing my wallet!

Most clubs won't let indpendent trainers use their gyms. Usually, it's a liability insurance issue. If you have good insurance, maybe proving that will make them comfortable enough to let you in.

I put a home gym in my basement for about 5k....one client 2x/week for a year will pay that off...long term, it's worth the investment IMO.

You need one or more of these: more food, more weight, more reps or more rest.

you just have to look outside the box, don't just look at health clubs. velocity sports performance, that i intern at, lets independent trainers come in and use the place for $25 a session. they have a track, turf area and all sorts of goodies to use too. look for places like that.

even though i probably won't accept a job there when my internship is over, i'll definitely bring my own people there on the side whenever i have time.

I refuse to work for someone else, so I equipped my basement and it's now my training studio. As someone else mentioned, it seems like a lot of money up-front, but it totally pays for itself over time. Just be sure you have the time and money for marketing yourself if you're going to go independent. I'm not sure what space you're working with either, so this may not be a possibility for you.

You may also want to check with apartment complexes, corporate clientele, etc. Places that have gyms but haven't hired on trainers. You may be suprised at the places you can get business. The most important thing is to be creative and think "bigger picture".

    Good luck to you!

I am independent and pay rent at a gym to be able to use it. You will have good luck with small gyms like Snap and Anytime because they usually have such weak PT programs that the competition does not bother them. You can find this sort of situation for as little as $200 per month. Good Luck.
