I would say get something with good gas mileage, yet not a POS car. I would say a two or four door ford, nissan or chevy would definitely be great.
I have had experience with fords, and I think they are great, very reliable and they just keep going.
Currently, I drive a nissan altima which is a very fast car, very fun to drive and everything. I would definitely look into a 2003-2008 altima or maxima, because they are very fuel efficient, comfortable and fast.
I have an Altima for 200/month, to refer to your above post.

Not a good Idea..... Ok think first... hes looking for a first car, and a 96-01 is getting old. When you step up into luxary you must be willing to spend a lot more money then necessary. For example, Maintence, parts, and insurance steps up and can be troublesome. And for 10k ? for only 10k you could pick up a A4, but you could easily be spending another 10k on parts in the next couple of years. My dad's friend picked up a 85 Merc ( forgot the exact modle, v6 coupe..)for about 13,000. Thought It was a deal until he had engine problems etc... Eventually he ended up adding a 30,000 in repairs. So he spend around 43,000 whe he probly could have picked up a 04 E class.
