Fish Oil Dosage Question
Hi.
New to the board....pleased to be here.
I am currently off season....not training for a comp. I am taking 6000 mg of fish oil a day. 2 caps 3 times a day for a total of 6 caps.
I'm just wondering what everyone else takes on and off season. Less? More?
Please give why if possible also. I'm wondering if I'm taking too much.
Thanks.

I generally aim of about 2-3g of EPA a day, and take as many capsules as necessary to get that.

Do you consider epa to be more important then dha?

My dr. told me that epa is more important for adults, and dha is more important for children. He also told me that two capsules per day is sufficient for the mental benefits. Unless I'm really sore, I only take two (nordic naturals ultimate omega) that provides 650 mg epa and 450 mg of dha. If I really have some serious DOMS, I find that taking about 6-8 capsules per day really helps the pain.

I appreciate the replies. I didn't know the ladies section was so slow here! I thought I would have had many more replies! Do you know where I can post where more ladies will reply? A section or another website? Thanks.

Basically, there is no hard and fast answer. For health, I'd go for two or three times the recommended amount on your bottle of fish oil. If you want a theraputic dose, you need to go a lot higher, but should consult a nutritionist about it.

2g/day offseason, none during prep.
Too much fish oil can thin your blood.

Transition to fish oil, SC. It's much better. The gels are odorless and tasteless and no fish burps.

x2. Flax has no EPA or DHA, just ALA which is poorly converted.

http://blog.bodybuilding.com/deserus...guided-debate/
A lot fish oil users claim it?s superiority to vegetable oils because of the poor conversion of ALA to DHA. However, the body only needs a small amount of DHA to benefit from it. ALA is also very important stand alone and is why one should consider both fish and vegetarian (flax oil, almonds, natural peanut butter) sources of omega three. Calorically speaking, it is much easier to fullfill your daily fat intake requirements using vegetable based oils.
One thing which flax contains and fish oil does not are lignans. Lignans are phytoestrogens which bind to estrogen receptors in the body. Some claim flax oil increases estrogen production in men. However, this popular misconception isn?t true. Although phytoestrogens can also bind to estrogen receptors, their estrogenic activity is much weaker than endogenous estrogens, and they may actually block or antagonize the effects of estrogen in some tissues.
Bottom line, is that you should try to achieve an EFA intake that incorporates ALA, DHA, and EPA. Furthermore, you should try to achieve a balance of 1:1 of omega 6 to omega 3?s. However, anything less than 5:1 is considered good by most nutritionists. That typical American diet is 30:1. This imbalance promotes inflammation due to the excessive intake of omega six. The higher the omega 3 content in your diet the more it combats this as omega three is an anti-inflammatory.
However, too much pure DHA/EPA can also be negative in attenuating necessary inflammation. Following eccentric motion, some inflammation is necessary for hypertrophy to occur. Too much of this will limit positive inflammation and cause a host of other physiological imbalances. If you are going to supplement with pure fish oil use no more than a gram a day of EPA/DHA unless directed to by a physician.
