Pull ups with legs out/knees bent

I suffer from mild lower back pain as a result from a buldging disc. When i do pull ups, it will irritate the disc- I'm assuming from the involuntary contractions of the lower back when performing the exercise. Anyways, I was wondering if there were any "specialists" who would know how to combat this, such as pulling my knees to my chest when doing pull ups to keep the lower back stretched at all times?... Thanks!

If it works for you that do it, otherwise this is best set in the injury form.

I almost always do pull-ups with my legs straight out. Not only does it help isolate (i.e., keep you from swinging/kicking) but it's a great ab workout too.

Try doing them with your legs straight down. If you have lower back pain I would think that keeping your back as straight as possible would reduce the pain you're feeling

Edit: By trying to hold your legs up or keep your knees bent you are going to be putting more pressure on your lower back

what about some how or another propping your feet behind you? when I want to cheat and get some extra pull ups in I'll hook my resistance band to the bar and catch it with my ankles.

Normally I just bend my knees so I dont hit the ground. I do have good form but I can't help but arch my lower back a little when pulling up. This is when pressure is put on the disc, which results in some sciatica and other minor back pain.
I did lift my legs today and it did seem to help a little. The only problem is that my abs are a little weak so it will take some time before this form gets a little easier.

    Thanks to those with suggestions.

I just starting experiencing a bit of this myself, where is your bulge?
I know it sounds weird but shaving your body hair and injecting testicle shrinking substances into your butt actually makes you less of a man.

I can't take so much as 2 weeks off or mine starts hurting real bad. Lifting is my cure. Just wish I could do deadlifts.

Perhaps you can. If you use a hexbar /trapbar you put less stress on your lower back. I has several spine injuries (not from sports) and starting wit a trapbar worked fine. The muscular recruitment is a litlle different than using a regular DL but it is a good sustitute.

When I put my knees at a 90 degree angle, I feel lower back being worked, when the legs are straight down (or almost straight), I feel upper back more. It sounds like you should find a higher bar if you have to bend your knees to use it.

You can try less strenuous excesses for lower back. Here are some examples:

Yeah, someone will turn him red soon for this, this seems to be the forum's M.O.

I've never understood the necrobump-phobia personally. The messages are public & you're never gonna meet these people anyway so what difference does it make if it was created today or years ago? Are people really that concerned that the person the message was aimed at may never read the response? They are wasting the forum's time?

At the time of this post I'm making , the stats for this thread are: Views-3264, Replies-13. What does this tell you? -> There are a lot more people who are interested in reading the thread (therefore benefiting) than people actually asking for questions directly. The negging is really a classic case of monkey see monkey do in the community.

    I concur.

I fully support the neggings of necros when it is either utterly pointless threads to begin with or someone necroing to chime in with some utterly pointless post.

But this thread had merit and the necroing post provided info that might help someone else with the same issue.

    Ergo, he's now green again.
