If it aint posative STF-Up!
Why do folks feel they need to burst your bubble when it comes to a personal best. Last week I pushed 255 once clean, after doing 4 sets of 205x6. I was on cloud nine, then this douche comes over and told me....that my back had an arch in it so it didnt mean much..i was pissed!!!!...i had my shoulders pinned down to the bench when i pushed it...feet flat on the floor..drove through shoulders and feet......sometimes i feel my long arms cheat me...but i go all the way down anyways......"HE" the douche, says he concentrates more on form, not the weight...that was his way of ****ting on my accomlishment i think.....and to a slight degree i would have to agree with the point of form, but damn....sometimes a lil cheat is ok on that rep that means the difference between growing or just being tired....and in my case this day...it was the rep that re-engergized me to wantn to come back the next week and do it again....needless to say, he was lucky i was spent cuz i wanted to slap a 45 across his forhead.
Am i wrong in being pissed....or does EVRY lift have to be by the book perfect form.

You are always going to get the knockers. Congrats on a personal best - as longs as it means something to you , their knocks are irrelevant.

Are you talking about bench presses? I thought that there was 2 ways to do these and that arching the back and puffing the chest up was the way for powerlifting and back flat was another way. That's what my book tells me and it's got pictures of both ways. So if my book is right then you did it right anyway.
Even if you did do something a little off perfect it still counts because you still pushed that amount of weight. If you were pinned under a boulder or a piece of iron from a fallen building would you stop to see if your form was perfect or would you push using all your might any way possible so that you could escape? Would you then tell people that you didn't really achieve getting out from under the boulder properly so it didn't count? Heck no!

Yeah, so. Someone dissed you.
Why do you care. you know what you did and you're proud of yourself.
The only way anyone can hurt you is if you allow them to.
Don't listen to the naysayers. So you dropped form on a new PB. You'll do it in good form soon enough.

Next time why not just say "**** you"?
Maybe thats no the politically correct way, or against your club rules but you do that a couple of times (no more then 3 I would think) and channel that anger your presenting here and I suspect you wont have any more problems.
I witnessed something similar in my gym a few months ago, guy was doing barbell curls, heavy weight and cheating to get them up (almost exactly what arnold reccomends in his encyclopedia...) so another person comments he is swining his back etc. (which he was)
Guy curling says "WTF do you care, did someone leave you in charge?" the other guy tells him not to be so sensative or something.
Neither of the two seem to have gone out of there way to speak to one another since. Unless your their to make friends and be a friendly guy in the gym, dont give any quarter to know it alls.
Congrats on your lift.

I can honestly say that I've never had anyone comment on my form or anything else at the gym. Why would someone just walk over and make a comment like that out of the blue? Gotta be some kind of weirdo...

Nice job on the bench! I've always felt that a (little cheat) when going for max reps is ok, as long as it doesn't put you in harms way (injury) Again, nice job, and keep it up!!!!

1) As long as your rear and shoulders stay on the bench, arching is fine. 2)Screw 'em! Nice job man!! Tell the guy to p^ss off.

People should shut up in the gym unless asking a question about an excersise or asking to work in between sets.
You never know what another's story may be. I had a torn rotator cuff and had to lift light for weeks. I got a lot of weird looks as to why this big guy was lifting so light. Screw them.
Any personal best deserves a CONGRATS!

Sounds like you used the proper power lifting technique's. Shoulders together, flat on the bench, slight arch in the back and feet planted on the floor.

The last time I maxed on bench a guy came up to me, a trainer in the gym, and said "What is that, 450? That's nothing, I know this guy...blah, blah, blah 900 blah blah all natural yadda yadda?" There will always be somebody who "used to", "knows a guy", "back in school", "before the CIA wiped my memory", etc. Just be happy with your own PR's and create your own goals based on your dreams.

it sounds almost unbelievable that a stranger would venture to say something like that to a lifter: what does he care?? is it a competition, sanctioned??
it's a guy lifting in the gym, who can arch as much as he wants whenever he wants......
simply unbelievable!!!
when I hear these stories, I am just amazed......what a luxury home training is!
As for Benching: never my strong suit: back in my late twenties, I was approaching 300 but NEVER got over it....very soon after hurt my shoulder and it seemed everytime I was ready to get over that hurdle, I would hurt my shoulder again...
finally, I admitted that my body was telling me something: that being back in the dark days of ignorance that I shared just like everyone else who refuses to truly listen to their body.
But I remember it well, and it is a GAS to get under a heavy weight and lift it: these days, I wouldn't dream of trying and instead concentrate on controlled reps....

We all do things wrong in the gym, heck we are only human.
If you had to lift off slightly to get that personal best then fine, go ahead and cheat a little. The huge boost you will get mentally, the next time will ensure you get at least 2-3 out with good form.
The only time I would comment on someone's form would be if I thought they were going to actually injure themselves.
I had a guy follow me round the gym once, never changed the weights that I had machines set at. Made him feel good that he was doing it all easier than me. When I got to dumb bell shrugs I went up about 20lbs up on what I normally did. Worked real hard on making sure I got a set of 6 out without looking like my head was going to explode. When he went to pick up the weight and it didn't move he didn't look very cocky any more. Never followed me round the gym again.
I guess I should have thanked him. I'd obviously been going easy on myself with shrugs till that day.
