Unpleasant side effect!!!!!!!!!!
So, I've cleaned up my diet somewhat, but am experiencing a rather unpleasant side effect Rather embarrassed bout posting it really but not sure exactly what is causing it...and what to do about it.
If you haven't already guessed I'm talking flatulence - and not the noisy smell-less kind...
So is it the oats, the egg whites, the CC? The protein powder? ANy suggestions much appreciated before my hubby makes me sleep in another room!!!!:P

What is in the protein powder? Any fake sweeteners? Those can cause gas. Egg whtes would be my next guess. What are you mixing with your protein powder?

If the protein powder lists CONCENTRATE then that is the culprit.
Replace it with a protein ISOLATE and your gas problem will disappear, I guarantee it

if you eat more protein overall in your diet - it's called Protein fluffs
something that happens naturally when you put more protein into your body than carbs

Oats are also a notorious killer. Try eliminating one thing for a couple days and see how it goes.

Maybe I'm just lucky but mine tapered off after a few weeks. But I feel your pain, me yelling "I FARTED SORRY" and darting from the room was a regular occurance when I changed my diet.
Now, however, I rarely fart. It's when I cheat that ppl better watch out.

hahaha! mine too has seemed to taper off quite a bit in the last couple of weeks. i blame the protein powder. now that i think of it, i'm using powder much less often n the last couple of weeks as well. hmmm. a couple of weeks ago, there was a shirt that me and my husband saw at wal mart that showed a stick figure guy with that cloud coming from his 'butt' and it said 'free gas' and he kept saying he was going to get that shirt for me, so i know all about the apologizing while running from the room. haha.

A digestive enzyme might help too. But I think someone else had posted and I agree, take out whatever foods you think might be the offender and then one at a time introduce them back. They do the same thing with food allergies too.

Hi, PP has sucralose.....and creatine and glutamine. WHen I drink it just add water and sometimes a little yoghurt ( I don't like milk). ALso I add it homemade protein bars.
Sensible suggestions guys! Thanks Definatley have upped the protein intake...can;t quite bare the thought of cutting out my beloved oats and egg whites though!! lol AM hoping my body will adapt soon. Does that happen?

could be the sucralose. It's a fake sugar and if it reacts to people like sugar alcohols do (maltitol, sorbitol) then that may be the reason behind the farts. Sorbitol and matitol cause a laxative effect.

BWAHAHA! Good stuff!
To the OP,
Your body has to get adjusted to the increased protein intake and your GI tract will go through some floral changes to adjust for the influx as well. If you aren't used to the high fiber of oats they won't help either. However, you can ease the process a bit by eating digestive enzymes with some of your meals. Regardless, it will take some time to adjust.

This thread makey me laugh
The change in the diet does disrup the ole digestive tract for a while. Increase protein and fiber consumption is a deadly combo for the air around you. Luckily it's usually temporary. Give it some time and your body should adjust to the change. If it doesn't it could be that you don't agree with something you are eating. I agree with what was said above, the ingredients in the protein powder is the first place to look. On at a time, eliminate suspected culprits and see if the problem goes away.

There's been gas warfare at my home. So far I've been defeated two days in a row, despite severe allergies. I have two retreat rooms with windows and good locks left. Wish me luck.

I get bad gas from certain veggies, especially when I eat them raw. Bell peppers are probably the worst, and it can be really painful gas, too. I started taking beano when I eat 'trouble foods' and that's made it much more tolerable.

Beano is great for gas related to veggies. There are different enzymes you can get for whatever is giving you gas troubles. If it's protein that gives you problems look for a digestive enzyme that has protease in it. Probiotics might help too.

Hey thanks for your post PLease excuse my ignorance, but what are digestive enzymes? I have always eaten oats for breaky - love my oats!! But am eating more egg whites and more protein overall....
It is soooo embarrassing. I don't even want to go out in public....also having lots of bloating as well. Especially by the end of the day. Is it normal to wake up with a nice flat tummy and then as soon as you start eatn and drinking a little pot sticks out?

Digestive enzymes are enzymes in the alimentary tract that break down food so that the organism can absorb it. The main sites of action are the oral cavity, the stomach, the duodenum and the jejunum. They are secreted by different glands: the salivary glands, the glands in the stomach, the pancreas, and the glands in the small intestines.
however you can buy these in tablet form as well to help the gut along with food digestion

There's a can of deodorizer within arm's reach. A compromise: I can walk out of the room quickly and go the other side of the house or outside.

Remember, you don't need to go overboard with the protein...if it is causing you some digestion issues, I would back off a little. Many people/diets overestimate the amount of protein need to add muscle. How many grams of protein are you having per day? You only need 1 gram per pound of bodyweight, anything more is really overkill IMO and would be cheaper and easier for you to fill up your calories with good carb choices (make sure you eat eating enough good fat too).
As others have commented on, some protein powders are not very good for the digestion due to the type of whey they use. What brand is it? I would go for a reputable company that includes some digestive enzymes in the mix (a good cheap brand is Dymatize which agrees with me and does have some enzymes add - I think ONs do to, but I haven't tried it).
Another culprit is not taking time to chew and digest your food properly. Alot fo people don't chew there food and eat too quickly. Make sure you are sitting down when eating in a calm environment and chew chew chew!
I hope the symptoms go away soon!

I was having this problem and after taking digestive enzymes for a few weeks, the issue improved about 70% (not good enough, in my book). So after noticing that it was apples that caused most of 'my' belly bloating/gas problem, I have pretty much cut them from my diet and will snack on grapes instead, and without even taking the enzymes for several days, the gas problem has improved about 95%. Guess it just shows that it`s not only high protein that can produce the negative side effects of clean eating.

I don't have this problem as long as the protein powder I take has aminogen, such as the ON whey protein. When I was buying protein that didn't have aminogen, I'd take the NOW Superenzymes which is a broad spectrum enzyme product.
