Wikipedia
I notice many people are taking wikipedia as a source.
You cant do that because wikipedia is an open source, which means that anyone could change the information there at any time.
Another factor of the wikipedia is the writer's credibility and knowledge in the subject. You dont know the writer so it pretty hard to tell how good is this information is.
I not saying dont use wikipedia at all. Wikipedia is a good website to start you search for information and you could actully use some of the source links to look deeper into the matters. But It is not a credible source to use it for debate or serious conversation.

I agree. Any time I have used it here has been for the sake of time and convenience, when the information is on par with what I have read in credible places. And I always say how bad I am for doing it, and encourage people to look at the sources cited in the entry for a better resource.

It is pretty easy to get some information from wikipedia but once you got alot of information you have to see where to start your research.
espeically things that invovle many different opions.
I really more for the evidence and credibility of the source rather than what the general public says or what the other people want to hear.

it's not as bad as people make out to be. Alot of people link websites that is basically just one person's opinion on a subject and portray it as fact.
at the end of the day i'm not going to spend hours writing up a thesis and doing offline research in a library to disprove something or someone on an internet forum

It is just bad to use secondary sources for anything. Wikipedia and/or other encyclopedias are not good sources because they are just summaries of other primary sources.
Use it for what it is, a nice quick reference guide. *NOT* a professional research tool.

I don't use wikipedia either. However, if someone is trying to convince me of something and that's all they got... Scroll to the bottom and check out the sources. If it's about disproving a chemical formula and source is www.godoverscience.com then yeah, you can't trust the source. But if it's a UT Austin professor's powerpoint or something. Then you can be safe my child.

I remember once I got some good information by wiki.
like the iron fist, breathing...etc and they send me to a more detailed source.
But once there was a big problem of information because wikipedia even give some information about people behind the scene and what there job and connection to other politicians and organization. But you cant say all of them are wrong but also you cant prove them they are right.

you're right about that, but sometimes the random information doesn't stay on the page very long. For example, I always vandalized the Steven Seagal page and wrote that he did porn in the 80's but it was usually gone in 2 minutes. However, someone at my college went to the college page on Wikipedia and edited that I killed 12 students there and the blurb lasted for about a week. Needless to say, campus security woke me up at 4 am one morning to talk about it but I didn't get in trouble.

Actually with the new verification procedure they put in place I think it's decent now. Sure it's not 100% but it's WAY better than when it first launched.

It's ok as a source for simple facts like "George Washington was our first President".
Beyond that I question its reliability.

Discrimination and discernment of what seems correct or seems like bull****. Wikipedia is seriously nerdly moderated. I'm suspicious of articles that cite no references or sources, however; but even then you have to use your own judgment. Wikipedia is no different than the internet at-large, or even these bodybuilding forums. Yet these are quoted and accepted as immutable truth all the time.
