my right palm had been going numb off and on for some time. mostly after doing any heavy pressing exercises (bench, shoulder press)
i recently gained a little strength and started doing 225 on bench for reps. last week when i was benching, i could not finish because of severe pain in my right palm.
it's towards the left side of the palm towards the lower portion under the ring finger. now the area is no longer going numb, only the sharp pain when i apply a large amount of pressure in the area.
i have been doing some reading on it and am wondering what the treatment for this would be.
would i potentially have to have surgery? or would be be fixed with some "therapy"
i know it's a rare case but if anyone has any insight on this i would really appreciate it.

This type of injury is common in cyclists. Basically it is compression of branches of the Ulnar nerve the track through your palm. This is why cyclists (especially long distance riders) always wear gloves with padding across the palm.
As goofy as it looks, you may have to get some high density foam and use that until the nerve has a chance to heal. If you ice your hand after training it will help keep the inflammation down and work on stretching the muscles in your hands. If there in no numbness then the damage is probably not bad.
Surgery, not likely. From a surgeons point of view the palm is called "the surgical no mans land"(I'm not kidding either). There is so much stuff in there it's crazy.
all that said - If it gets worse, see a doc.
in a nut sac
padding
ice
stretching
thats it - - bash away
good luck

HRK (herb) is correct. It's most likely pressure on your ulnar nerve in the region of Guyon's canal (where the nerve travels through as it enters your hand). To visualise - if you are looking at your right palm, there is a bony prominence on the lower left side. Just to the right of that is where Guyon's canal is. By high density foam he is advising you use firm foam or similar to spread the pressure over a larger surface area so it is not just concentrated on the base of your palm.

if you go to either a fabric shop or an arts&crafts store , ask them for high density foam. Basically, you're looking for material that couch cushions are made of.
You can check out hardware stores too, Home depot. In the tile section they have sponges for cleaning grout from tiles they are good too.
The stiffer harder it is to compress the better. The more padding you get between you and the bar the less pain you will have.
