push ups, what's the point of them?

What is the benefit of doing 100 push ups before bed, every day, for a weight lifter? Will it keep me pumped 24/7, would it make me bigger, would it help with endurance?? If anyone who's been doing this, has an opinion on this matter, I would love to hear it. Thank you.

I reserve pushups for vacation and business trips.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

The reason I ask, is because I had done 100 push ups, some time ago and for days I was pumped. So I was wondering if I could use this to continuously keep pumped, or would I be causing some kind of hinder to muscle growth by doing this every single night?

Nah it isn't, but I don't see why it cant be incorporated into a weight lifters overall goal. So although I am bulking, to get big, it'd be impressive to do push ups. I guess it's a personal matter then?

I think it would be more impressive if you did pull ups. Not sure how far you'll get bulking to get big using only bodyweight exercises. Stimulate the muscle enough so that it'll break down and build back up to be a little bigger over time the more you train it. (Not everyday.) Train, eat, and rest properly. Do not turn into a human spoon please.

Human spoon? What does that mean? Also, I think I'd do the push ups on my off days along with my small amount of cardio session. Thanks for the input.

A friend of mine did that every night for over a year. His triceps sucked major ass, his chest (although quite toned) wasn't very impressive in size. IMO save push-ups for 'maintenance' workouts, as a previous poster said when you are away from the gym or something.

Thoughts on weighted Pushups? And also Pistols/Weighted Pistols. If I included them with Dips/Weighted Dips, Pullups and Handstand Pushups you think I could gain mass? Not considering doing this solely, but I am curious...

Alright. I guess I will just do it for personal gain, rather than actual physical. I was just wondering if there was any visible gains to make from it, but there seems to be none. That's fine. Thanks again.

Let's say you focus on upper body only. Picture a spoon wearing shoes. That could potentially be you in unbalanced glory.

Do push ups before hitting the hot tub with some hot chicks! That is the best time to do push ups imo.

you weigh 135lbs. i suggest putting together a good workout plan, as well as getting your diet sorted out.

100 pushups before bed won't do much for you.
If your parents didn't have children, chances are you won't either.

Lets say you can only do 8 pushups, then yes they would be a great way to build strength and gage progress..

..but on the flip side you can do say 100 pushups, at that point it would be wise to start doing weighted lifts..

They have many benefits, personally I do not do them anymore. Too time consuming, I'd be doing sets of like 200+

i find push-ups most beneficial when your super setting them with something else.

for instance i do a leg and chest day. so i might do some squats then switch over to doing 30-50 push-ups.

Over time it could possible lead to over-exertion.

Why do you want to be pumped all day?
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

Doing lots of push-ups without balancing it with back and shoulder work is asking for muscle imbalances and shoulder pain. Martial artists are notorious for this. They tell me that they don't need to lift weights because they do tons of push-ups. Then after a couple of years, their shoulders are pulled forward so much that they don't have proper movement and they're in pain whenever they throw a punch or try to lift weights.

I think pushups are a good burnout exercise to end chest with. Try doing a complete chest workout and then do 3-4 sets of pushups to failure with 30-60 rest periods between sets. It gives a major pump.

It is easy to tell none of you have been to prison.I work as an officer in a prison that does not allow weights. You should see how big and cut up these guys can get from doing simple exercises like push ups and pull ups.You won't see results from doing 100,but try hammering out 1000 in 30 minutes while rotating from incline, flat and declined positions. There killers, maybe not as good as heavy lifting but can be effective.

do bench press instead if u want muscle mass. if you are on vacation or w/e and cant get to bench press then do pushups for replacement

i usually do 2 sets of 20 then as much as possible on the 3rd set.

also, r u keeping good form with ur pushups? cus 100 pushups with 100% strict form aint exactly easy... if u r then i'd like to c a video of this lol

p.s. u could always do some pushups in addition to bench press, but i'd make bench press a priority over pushups

I work out my lower legs, so it'd never be a spoon effect on me. Plan to hit the gym on leg days specifically, to add more weights to my squats. But thanks for the explanation.

Well one time I was able to do 75 push ups very fine, but that's from doing 20s and then after awhile raising it up till I was doing 75, but it was time consuming as you said, with doing proper form. Now I do them in 20 reps for 5 sets, with a 30 second rest in between. I guess I will do it as a warm up to my chest, bi and tri days.

    Thanks for the assistance everyone!
