This subject came up on another thread. Now i have not studied glycerol metabolism in great detail so i may be missing something here.
But as far as i know glycerol is something that helps increase blood volume by creating an osmotic effect in the blood that draws fluids from intracellular stores. This is why it is useful for sporting events in which lowered blood volume due to dehydration is an issue. But for a bodybuilder you would think that drawing water out of muscle cells and into the blood is counterproductive to anabolism and strength.
Now I could still be wrong, and there may be some strange uptake of glycerol into muscle cells. I know glycerol is taken up by fat cells to make triglycerides, and by the liver to be catabolized into stuff that enters into the glycolytic and gluconeogenisis pathways.

Perhaps one of the Controlled Labs reps could jump on this to provide the scientific benefit to a bodybuilder. I know I have used their GlycerGrow product in the past, but don't have the knowledge you're looking for. All I have is the anecdotal (it made me stronger, fuller) evidence... Interested in this thread as well...

i have a very sophisticated method of staying well hydrated during a workout
its called the water fountain
bodybuilders do not have to worry about hydration. Triathletes and marathon runners do.
I can't see the rationale for a bodybuilder using glycerol, sorry.
I know i know. check the logs

I use glycerine as part of my 'carbup' for competition and it aids in the 'shrinkwrapped' look. I have not used it as part of my regular training protocol thus far, though.

It was my understanding that glycerol could penetrate the membrane without active transport along its [conc] gradient. Although in retrospect, it does have a low membrane permeability coefficient.

after reading more it appears that glycerol can be stored substantially in between muscle cells (interstitial space). Which may actually draw water from the blood into the space between muscle cellls. That may of been what helped you acheive the look
But from a muscle building standpoint this might actually be detrimental. The glycerol outside of the cells would tend to draw water out of the muscle cells through osmosis. That is really want you do NOT want i would think.
Could be this glycerol pump is a "false Pump", and actually counterproductive
hey, don't shoot the messenger....

I've tried NX Labs's Plasmavol which has a bit of glycerol and to put it bluntly, I felt like **** while taking it. I was constantly drinking water and at the end of the workout was feeling thirsty still and bloated. So much for being hydrated. Not sure if this was due to the glycerol, the creatine or the mannitol tho. I know mannitol is a diuretic so it could've been that but I ripped through 3 liters of water in a half hour and was dying, that was insane. It's not under bb.com's store either so I assume it wasn't recieved so well after all.

An excerpt from this ARTICLE which doesn't neccesarily talk alot about glycerol, but I noticed this...
At baseline, interstitial glycerol was strikingly higher (P < 0.0001) in muscle (3710 microM) and adipose tissue (2760 microM) compared with plasma (87 microM), whereas interstitial glucose (muscle 3.3, fat 3.6 mM) was lower (P < 0.01) than plasma levels (4.8 mM).
I'll inspect more of it and might post some more If i find anything"Rather the pain of discipline, than the pain of regret."

i don't know much
but... would it help get more of the supplements you are taking into the muscle... just a little input, i've never used a product like this before...
quoted on cl glycergrow page...
In laymen's terms, taking glycerol in supplemental form quickly improves hydration and the absorption of other supplements that are taken with it. The end result is faster delivery of nutrients when and where you need them the most and the prolonged "pump effect" during your workouts.
i know this is broscience, but it sounds like its a good thing
i should probably delete this, the stuff you guys are talking about is wayyy beyond me... i'm the finance/accountant typeLast edited by Feny; 03-31-2008 at 01:22 PM.
