how many shakes a day?
hey guys just wondering, on average, how many liquid meals do you eat per day? (when i refer to shakes-- im personally speaking about Universal Real Gains). i take two per day now, but i was given advice on picking up an extra 750 calories per day and this would be an easy way to get most of those in. what do you guys think?

I have one a day, and only on days that I workout. I've always thought it better to get extra calories from well rounded whole food meals. However, if your shake had added fruit, peanut butter, oats, maybe some olive oil, I could justify having several a day.

I?m with you 100%
Shakes/Protein Bars= CONVINIENCE but no way better than real food...besides, its thermic effect is low compared to real food.
However, in my case I normally take one per day

normally 1 post workout, though I often have one before bed since there is less cleanup compared to a meal. On hectic days I may have as many as 4 though. I honestly do not think about it too much, cause one way or another I am going to get enough calories in every day.

The essential times for your two protein shakes: 20 grams whey prior to workout and 40-60 grams whey post-workout. I do this as well as a casein protein before bedtime (helps for sustained amino acid delivery). The casein shake can be substituted for cottage cheese, since that contains a lot of casein protein.
If you aren't already eating numerous, small quantity whole food meals in a day, I would recomment that first.

Take this advice to the bank,
why bother with a gainer all day when its mostly simple carbs, give ur body something more satisfying and that has some actural nutrients.
make your own gainer with oats, whey, pb , fruit, and milk.. thats 100% better then real gains

I take about 5 a day...And I also eat 6 meals a day...I drink one intra workout (WHEY) with purple wrath, Post workout (ON 2:1:1 Recovery), Mid Morning (WHEY, 11:00am ish), afternoon (WHEY, 4:30pm ish) and Casein before bed.
If you go the weight gainer route...I think Universals is probably the cleanest weight gainer out there I considered taking it but added more calories from food.

For me....no more than 2 shakes a day.... Post workout, and 30 mins before bedtime. And each shake only has about 40g protein... Whey + milk

i don't agree with you there, bob. Real Gains has an excellent profile.
for someone like me who tries to eat 6-7 times a day, and is at work for 4 of those meals, i need shakes for convenience. I've researched the best shakes and I've gone with Real Gains. I think it's definitely as cost-effective as a homemade shake, and the convenience factor puts it over the top. i drink 2 shakes at work and eat 2 whole foods meals at work too (oats, fruits, lots of tuna, cereal, milk, PB and almonds stashed in my cube at all times). I wouldn't be making the gains i'm making today without Real Gains.
to the OP, go with shakes when convenient. but if you have time and the ingredients needed to make a homemade shake, definitely go that route.

i hear yuo with it is convientient but also are packing sandwiches and hard boiled eggs, trail mix, granola.. etc etc simple things you can always have aroudn the desk at work
Im also not too fond of something with its first ingrediant "Maltodextrin" because thats not going to be the best thing to put into your body even coming from a gainer.
Id just chug on some milk all day at work to keep the macros and cals up then sipping on a gainer.. thats just my theory. But if you cant get the foods then yes i would say go for it!

i understand about the maltodextrin. i don't have a blender i can use at work either, and that really hurts. i can't make a shake with oats, pb and fruit in it when all i have is a shaker cup lol.

im in the same boat as you.. i eat 3-4 meals at work too. one usually = chicken and rice, the next = tuna and yogurt, and one shake. its just hard to keep up on calories unless i bring a gym bag full of food to work every day.
and yes i know there is no substitute for real food. lets face it, we have goals but they have to be modified for the practicality of our lives.
thanks fellas.. i appreciate the advice!
