Hi,
Quick question, when you use ketosticks do you pee on the stick and then pull it out of the stream right away and then count to 15 or do you pee in a pot and keep it sitting in the pee for 15 seconds and then pull it out to see the results? Thanks.
Neil.

ps forgot to mention, while you're waiting those fifteen seconds you MUST do the following:
Stand on one leg, and spin round three times with your hands in the air, whilst shouting "OH KETO, GOD OF PEE - TURN MY STICK TO PURPLE!"

The only thing ketostix are useful for is bracelets. They're a fimmich. I would go with how you feel, your breath odor and your weight (if in keto, you'll probably drop water weight right away)

I disagree . . . they are a pretty inexpensive and convenient way (especially for a newbie) to get them some quick, easy feedback to see if they are getting into ketosis successfully. Sure, they are probably not 100% accurate and you can get to the point where you become "fat adapted" and stop showing traces of ketones even though you are in ketosis. But I think that they rarely give you a "false positive". If you have traces showing on the stix then you are pretty reliably in ketosis (but that doesn't necessarily mean that you are not in if you don't see traces--you simply might not have an excess of ketones to detect).
Once you get some confirmation that you are in ketosis, you can take better note of what that state feels like and see if you can recognize it better in the future without the stix. But for the $10 that it costs to buy the "Walgreens brand" (50 stix) that lasts a couple months it's a drop in the bucket compared to what most people spend on supplements.
If they help you, use them for a little while to help you get tuned into what you need to be doing. Why not?*MFC Elder Statesmen Cabinet Crew*

They are priceless to the guy or girl that REALLY wants this to work, and is always questioning and second guessing his or her diet.
I have absolutely no problem shelling out $10 for the generic sticks and tracking how long it takes me to get back into Keto after a carb-up. I wasn't feeling any different, and I didn't have the taste or the excessive urination, so I was starting to wonder if anything was happening. 10 days in, I peed and it came up purple. The very next day I started to melt the fat off! That little affirmation that I'm doing the right thing, sent me into a frenzy of positivity.
They are well worth it to me. I've managed to understand my own carb limitations, and I know how long it takes me to get back into ketosis after a cheat meal (my birthday was last Friday, so I really tested my theories this weekend).Sedit qui timuit ne non succederet. Audentes fortuna iuvat

I've been on Keto for around 5/6 weeks now. I am adjusting my diet all the time, but I have been keeping to the percentages of 55-60% fat, carbs 5% and 35% protein.
I am averaging around 1500-1700 cals per day. My main fat sources are from dairy (I have around 100g-200g dairy per day), Olive oil (maybe 1-2tbsp per day), and the rest from meat really.
My carbs are fibrous veggies (cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach - altogether around 200g of these veggies per day).
My protein is mainly from chicken, tuna, lean ground beef and the above dairy products.

i test positive at pretty much anytime
even the morning after a 40g carbs mango before sleep
honestly a good time to test for ketosis would be after a workout when you have pretty much depleted any carbs you might have eaten at any time in the day and are running off the fats.. This would ensure your in ketosis and give you the best result..(you should test pos. all the time if your in ketosis and are watching the carbs)

Another good time to test is first thing in the morning. During the day you'll be drinking (or should be drinking) enough water that the ketones will be diluted in your pee and they won't show up.
Overnight though they have more time to show up - that's when I've got my positive testing, as I drink a load of water during the daytime.
(I also agree that the sticks are very helpful during the initial phases - going into this diet for the first time for the uninitiated can be very scary as it sounds like it shouldn't work, so when you have visual confirmation it is a real psychological boost for the first time to show it's actually working).
Although remember, it's not absolute proof whether you're in keto or not - the slight nausea and/or metallic taste in the mouth are also confirmation, both of which I've been experiencing.

One thing to keep in mind about ketostix is that you shouldn't get too caught up on how dark they turn. As long as they are showing any ketones at all, you're good. You will have different levels of ketones show up at different times of the day, depending on how many you've burned or used up. It's possible for it to show up very dark at one point, or very light at another time of the day.
