Thumbs up Eugene Sandow fan club: the Greek Ideal

thread in tribute to attaining the Greek Ideal body.

Eugene Sandow, needs no introduction was the father of modern bodybuilding.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandow

no homo applies through this thread. If you can't look at art, don't worry about it

    Sandow's diet and regimine:

    ON DIET:
I do not care for anything intoxicating (hard liquor), but do enjoy a beer or some wine on occasion. I never touch tea or coffee. I eat "plain", wholesome food for the most part, but do "indulge" on occasion. I have my meals at regular intervals, and prefer simple foods that are easy to digest. I chew my food well and believe strongly that mastication is a key to good health. I believe a good nights sleep is very important in maintaining health. I am not able, due to my performance schedule, to go to bed before midnight, so I remain in bed asleep until 11 typically.
    SANDOW'S TYPICAL DAY:
Year round I take cold baths, and afterwards, I do a light-weight dumbell routine. I then have breakfast, then attend to my correspondence. I then enjoy seeing my friends. After this, I typically go for a long walk or if it is not sunny, I will take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. I have my dinner promptly at 7 p.m., then attend my evening performance. After appearing at the theatre, I will have my evening cold bath, followed by a late night supper.

    Sandow's stats:

    SANDOW'S MEASUREMENTS
    At age 35 (1902)

    height: 5'9 1/4"
    weight: 202 lbs.
    neck: 18"
    chest: 48"
    biceps: 18 1/2"
    forearm: 16 1/2"
    wrist: 7 1/2"
    waist: 30"
    hips: 42"
    thigh: 26"
    knee: 14"
    calf: 18"
    ankle: 8 1/2"

    all from: http://www.sandowmuseum.com/sandowone.html

He did this all over 100 years ago. With the nutrition knowledge, medicine and equipment we now have I think most people can do it with a bit of work.

    cheers

compared to his body, his chest seems underdeveloped. Obviously well above average, but I'd attribute it to genetics since the rest of his body is huge, and it's hard to keep one part that is so large small(er) in comparison.

lots of stretches, perhaps; apparently he was a fan of randomly tensing his muscles throughout the day as he did his other work

None of those measurements look right,

18" arms?, at 5'9" thats pretty bloody big.

It doesn't look like his forearms are 16", or his chest 48".

Eugene Sadow wouldn't lie, tough guy.

joking aside, I doubt he would, because what would he reference it against, and why would it matter? There wasn't a widely held notion of 20"+ = huge back then

I'm pretty sure they were at one point in his life, probably in his late 20s or early 30s. The pics the OP posted were all from different times. I think the first one was from when he was 19 and he wasn't 18" then.

    thigh: 26" <------ thighs actually 23'
    knee: 14"
    calf: 18"<---------calves actually about 15"
    ankle: 8 1/2"

    all from: http://www.sandowmuseum.com/sandowone.html

He did this all over 100 years ago. With the nutrition knowledge, medicine and equipment we now have I think most people can do it with a bit of work.

    cheers

    he exaggerated about his measurements.
get a copy of "The Truth About Weight Lifting" ,it has his true measurements in it.

I won't buy the book just for that, but I'll take your word for it.

How does his waist go from 30" to hips 42" when the pics look like it's almost straight down.

Everyone needs to stop talking about his measurments. He is the founder of bodybuilding, and the bronze statue givin to Olympia winners is a statue of him. Show some respect.

If they're not important, don't post the measurements. If you see something false, it's natural to question it.

posted for you chaps since it's what you worry about. They're interesting to know, but making or breaking a thread is pretty retarded.

and as far as the proof that he lied, referring to a weight he "had" to have been to get the size he claims, Frank Zane, as you mentioned was contest weight of 185.

I admire Eugen Sandow because he got bodybuilding are as it was called back them Physical Culture really going and all but I don't like the fact he exaggerated about his measurements.

For those interested in his measurements they where:

    Chest normal: 44 inches
    Chest expanded:47 inches
    upper arms:16 3/4 inches
    thigh:24 inches
    weight:180 pounds

These measurements where taken from The Truth about weightlifting by Alan Calvert first publsihed in 1911.
He wrote this book to get down to the heart of weightlifting and tell what feats where real and what wasn't and whose measurements where real and whose where exaggerated.

That is what I respect, its hard enough now days distinguishing natural physiques from steroid enhanced ones.

Those measurements are great and realistically achievable.
